Checking a Firearm

Traveling with your firearm is permitted provided certain requirements are met. Each Customer may check a firearm in place of one of the two free pieces of luggage at no charge, and the Customer must declare the firearm.

Firearms need to be in a hard-sided, locked container that is of sufficient strength for normal handling. The container must completely secure the firearm from access, and if the case can be pulled open with minimal effort, it will not be accepted.

Upon your arrival to the airport, be sure to visit the full-service ticket counter. Customer Service Agents can accept and check firearms and complete a firearms inspection tag.  Please visit our website before traveling to familiarize yourself with all requirements associated with transporting firearms.

**Temporary Change to our Firearms Acceptance Policy**

Southwest will temporarily stop accepting firearms for transport to/from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Ronald Reagan International Airport (DCA), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) from Saturday, January 16 through Sunday, January 31, 2021, with the exception of credentialed Law Enforcement Officers and Military traveling on military orders. Southwest is taking this voluntary measure to bolster security practices in the wake of recent events in the nation’s capital. The Safety and security of Employees and Customers is our utmost priority at all times, and we appreciate the cooperation and compliance of all those who choose to travel with us over the coming days.
