Rapid Rewards is a frequent flyer program. The points go to the passenger.
If you have a Chase Southwest Visa card, you can earn points on the purchase of any Southwest flights, regardless of who flies.

I'm not sure how it can be considered dumb, when it's correct. 😉
Sorry if you thought it was condescending.
Frequent flyer programs award the flyer for their loyalty, which is why the flyer -- not the purchaser -- earns the points/miles.
Credit cards award the cardholder for their loyalty, which is why the purchaser earns the points/miles.
Hope this helps.
