Bonus for new southwest cards

My wife has had a RR card for 3 years. I would like for her to upgrade the card and earn a bonus towards a companion pass but I’m told that while she can get the card, she doesn’t qualify for the bonus points because she already has a card. Can I cancel her card and apply again in 3or 4 months and qualify for the bonus
