Companion pass question

If I book a companion pass and my companion travels with me on the outboud flight, but needs to return earlier than I do is there a way to change his return flight with out me?  If I buy him a one way return, do I need to tell SW he's not travelling with me on the companion return?

The companion must be on the same flight.  The companion reservation with auto-cancel once you change your flight.
