You actually earn the 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of opening your account. Chase specifies: "Please allow up to 8 weeks for bonus points to post to your Rapid Rewards account," but in general, if you hit the spending threshold a week or so prior to your Chase account monthly closing date, they will be included when Chase sends the monthly points over to Southwest, and Southwest generally posts points from Chase within a few days. If you hit the spending threshold very close to your closing date, they may not post until the following month.
