I maybe making this up or maybe policies have changed since i got the chase southwest card. but i thought if flights were purchased with the card and they changed price or were canceled the refund was credited back to the southwest card not given in the form of a flight credit per person. has this changed recently?

Only Anytime and Business Select fares are refundable. Credits from those fares would go back to your original form of payment. Credits from Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares are provided as travel credits. Having a Southwest credit card has nothing to do with it and nothing has changed besides the addition of the WGA+ fare type which allows credits to be transferred.
