I am trying to change a flight (same flight....just a better price) and when I search for the flight, southwest shows a lower price. When I pull up my reservation to actually make the change, the price is different. It is the same price I paid originally. Is this common?

I would reach out to southwest on Twitter and maybe they can help with making the change if the price is cheaper.
Ive never heard of seeing a different price when you pull up your reservation vs doing a regular search.

No it is not.
to get the lower fare
1) Log in to SW's website
2) click on my account
3) go down to upcoming trips
4)pick the trip you want to change and select change flight
5) click on unselected to change it to selected
6) click on select new flights
7) click on the flight you want
and complete the process as you would in buying a new ticket.
