Is it possible to use a new promo code when changing a flight reservation?

Is it possible to use a new promo code if modifying an existing reservation to save some $/points while making changes? If so, where do you enter the promo code in the change process (what page or stage of the process)? Or, do you have to cancel and rebook a flight entirely to use a newly released promo code? TIA!
