I hope they do. We've been taking our pugs for the past 2 years and our only option is Alaska.

Really? I'm impressed. The hoops you need to jump through to bring a pet to Hawaii, including significant cost and the risk of having them possibly held in quarantine for weeks generally deters most pet owners from doing so.

As I suspected, unfortunately Southwest will not allow pets on flights to Hawaii. They will allow them on interisland travel, should you choose Southwest to island hop once you're there.

Pet Policy

We welcome both qualified emotional support and trained service animals onboard to and from Hawaii. To ensure it is a smooth travel experience for your furry friend, stay informed on policies and complete documentation needed prior to your departure.

  • Southwest Airlines does not transport pets to or from Hawaii. Only service dogs assisting Customers with disabilities and emotional support dogs and cats are permitted to travel with Customers between the U.S. Mainland and Hawaii. No other service animals or emotional support animals are permitted on flights between the U.S. Mainland and Hawaii. There are strict guidelines and specific programs that must be completed before your service dog or emotional support dog or cat can be accepted into the state of Hawaii.

Not sure if you’re aware but the State of Hawaii is VERY restrictive of animals coming from the mainland as it’s the only state that doesn’t have rabies.

You’d have to start prepping now. And it’s quite expensive. Go to the State of Hawaii animal quarantine website and start the process now. It’s also quite labyrinthine. Overall you’ll spend between 400-700 dollars per dog to get them through the process depending on how expensive vet services are in your area.

It sounds like the OP has previously taken their dogs to Hawaii on another carrier. If so, they've already completed many of the requirements (but would likely need updated documentation). Southwest as policy won't accept pets to Hawaii, so if traveling to Hawaii via Southwest you still won't be able to bring your pets, regardless of beginning the process early.

Just saw that 1st flight just landed in Honolulu.  Congratulations to the entire Southwest family for a job well done. And the icing on the cake is the pending contract with the mechanics.
