I just talked with some long time Southwest flight attendants that work out of Houston Hobby. They say they have to PAY for their own parking when they go to work. Is this true?! That's flat out Gangster if so. Hoping they were just jerking my chain.
BUT if that is the case, why? Southwest is worth tens of billions of dollars. Hoping you don't tell me they have to pay for their own uniforms as well. Yikes!

If they actually do I'm sure they get reimbursed, that just doesn't even sound legit

Not sure who pays but it's really not that outrageous for an employee at any company to pay their own parking. Think of all the businesses in large downtown areas, they don't all pay for their employees to park in nearby parking garages. Having worked a large city for a large company I know comparing the cost of a monthly parking pass at nearby garages was a frequent break room conversation. Parking is just another cost of commuting to work and should be factored into a decision to accept whatever compensation package is offered to an employee.

Well that was quick. The fact that airport employee parking would have to be considered in a “compensation package” is the most management thing you could say. I’m sure people have to negotiate for the water cooler at some establishments. Ghetto.
Houston Hobby isn’t downtown Manhattan. I doubt many airline employees pay to park even at JFK or LGA.
Ancillary income devices are super lame. Pay for checked bags LAME. Charge for a Coca Cola, WEAK! Software as a service. THE WORST. And on and on.
Not or providing your employees parking at Hobby is degenerate at best. Booooooo!
on a side note, glass door has high ratings for working at Southwest. So even if it lacks basic decency, it has that going for it.

I walk out of Love Field almost every time I return with returning flight crew that are headed for either the general airport parking lot or Parking Spot - both of which are paid lots.

Since the situation seems to be of great importance to you, I'd recommend that you not seek a flight crew position with the company.

No worries! As my original post says, I was just shocked to hear about it. I mean what do I care? I have an employment standard. And parking that I don’t have to pay for is part of it.
Even in Vegas these days they are charging for parking at most of the casinos on the strip. Ridiculous! And it sucks! Only just a few years ago it was all complimentary.
The rise of the “resort fee” is equally annoying. No value add! They say things like “You get use of the pool!” or “you get a coffee maker!” Well you had that all before. Only wall streeters and their ilk enjoy the nickel and dime culture. I don’t have a problem paying, but just give me the all in price up front so I can make a decision on where I want to stay without all the abnoxious additional billing.
I think the flight attendant job at Southwest is a good one, but would it be better or worse if the flight attendants got a message saying their company would provide them with parking? It’s not even about the money. Just decency. A couple million for a company that rolls in billions is a small price to pay to make a place better for its employees. Make a great company better. Disagree?

I suspect most people consider the totality of employment of which parking would be rather
small part.
