Is getting a 4 year degree in a flight school the same as a college

My name is Alex and I am fourteen looking for a career in aviation. I have many questions on how to accomplished my goal but after I graduate high school I would really enjoy flying for Southwest Airlines. Mainly, my biggest question is what is the process I need to go through after I get out of high school in order to get a job with SWA? I’m just curious if I need to go to college or just flight school.

Sincerely,

Alex

Hi @aviation2323,

Thanks for your interest in joining Southwest, even at such a young age! What specific Career are you interested in at Southwest? I would love to help answer your question!

Another great resource is a new mentoring organization (Professional Pilots of Tomorrow, http://www.theppot.org) which I am a part of.  We do not currently have a Southwest Airlines Mentor, but are working on it and have an extensive list of pilots at many other airlines that can help to point you in the right direction.  Good luck in your continued education.

If 4 year degree enough for working on flights? I thought it takes at least 6 years of studying for students to fly big planes.

It takes hours or flight time in the right or left seat to become a pilot - not the number of years. Also, a four year degree is preferred and not required.

Any degree awarded with either a BA or BS would be a 4 year degree. Is that what your flight school offers?

Here are Southwest's requirements:
