Backpack + carry-on bag?

I'm flying out in a couple of days and am realizing i need more packing space than i realized - I don't want to have to check a second full suitcase, but I have a carry-on size bag I can bring. I was planning on bringing a backpack for my laptop and stuff, so would I be allowed to bring my backpack as my "personal item" and my carry-on suitcase as my carry-on? It's been a long time since I've been on a plane and can't remember what the space is like for fitting stuff under the seat.

Yes, as a Southwest passenger, you are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item.  Per the Southwest.com FAQs, TSA regulations allow a backpack as a personal item when dimensions are 18.5 x 8.5 x 13.5 inches.

You are smart to check because some airlines severely limit carry-ons.

Welcome back to the flying world.

Shade...I understand you...I also have a journey next month and planning to take backpack, as the luggage isn't included in the cost. It is vety hard for me, because I love taking everything useful with me.
