Changing Flight and Location - What Happens to Unused Funds

I have a round trip ticket that expires in early September.  The value is around $400.  I am thinking about  changing the flight and locations - making it two trips to different destinations instead of this one destination originally planned.  These would be two shorter, less expensive trips that togehter should use all of the funds before they expire.

I just want to make sure I can do this.  For example, I change the flight and location from Nashville, TN to San Francisco.  This will use over $200.  Then in July I'd like to apply the unused funds for a trip to New Mexico.  Is this acceptable as long as I use the funds by the 9/8/17 expiration date?

Thanks.

Yes, as long as all the new travel booked is completed by the expiration of the funds.
