Checked baggage container

I need to bring a booth display to a conference next week, and the case for the display is just one inch larger than the oversized/overweight allowance (totals 81 inches and 82lbs, with plenty of extra interior space).  If I modify the case by trimming a few inches off the top and securing the case closed with tie-downs or wrap it in plastic, will it be acceptable as checked luggage?  Are there restrictions on the packaging of checked luggage? Thank you!

Since you'll be paying the $75 oversize/overweight fee, I suspect they will measure the item to make sure it's under 80" total, and if so, you should be fine. Good luck.
