Re: Difference in fare

I have never been able to modify my reservation online.  Ever.  I always get an error message on international travel.  I just missed out on saving almost 10,000 points (5000 each ticket) because of not being able to modify online.  I was on the phone with a few different agents (who were wonderful) and they could not see the fares that I had on my screen.  I even took a picture of them showing day and time.  They were not able to adjust the points to what I would have been able to if the system worked.  I have never been able to get points adjusted on any international travel.  They do not know why.

Hi Lindsey,

I am disappointed to hear inconsistent advice on Southwest policy on wanna getaway refund for fare change within 24 hours. I booked a flight at 12 am this morning- (Nov 1) 8 hours later I noticed that the fare dropped. So instead of cancelling and rebooking (which I should have) I called the customer service to change itinierary. The reason I called was I couldnt do so online due to some technical issues in the website (not my fault). I specifically asked if there was any difference between cancelling and changing. She told me by changing the reservation I could still get the refund on the difference in fare. Very similar to how you have advised here (I read this blog yesterday and that is why I didnt think it would make a difference between changin and cancelling within 24 hours. I should have still gotten a refund vs credit.) But when she sent me the revised itinerary I saw that the difference has been allocated as travel credit vs refund to my card. So when I called again what I learned was infact there is no 24 hour window that applies for Wanna get away fares. I dont think this is a policy change. If so why didnt the representative know about it this morning?

The reason I acted fast was to get a refund vs a credit. All I am getting now from your colleagues is a bunch of apologies but noone is willing to take responsibility for the miscommunication made here by you nor by the representative I spoke to this morning. I dont see why I should suffer for the lack of knowledge of policies that your staff have. Hope you can give me an acceptable solution. I dont need apology but I expect Southwest to take responsibility. Thanks

A full refund within 24 hours is required by law. Unfortunately, you must cancel to get the refund (not change).

Unfortunately, at this point you are likely out of luck. You could try contacting customer relations to see if anyone can understand your problem and try to help. Your best bet for a quick reply is via Twitter.

Unfortunately, that's just a website glitch. It sometimes shows "request refund" on non-refundable fares. 😞 Even if you select that option, you'll still just have the funds available under the confirmation number.

Suppose I book a wanna get away flight using points and there is a subsequent fare reduction.  Can I get the reduced fare and receive a refund of point, or do I just receive travel credit.  If the later, does this credit have to be used to purchase a subsequent flight within a year of my original booking date, or does the subsequent flight have to occur within a year

If I purchase business select tickets using only points and the fares/points decrease, can I be “refunded” the difference in points or is it only for non point purchases? And if so, am I understanding correctly that I should cancel and rebook in order to keep my tickets refundable?

thanks

Yes you can get the difference in points refunded to the account you used to book the flight. All you have to do is click change reservation then select the cheaper flight then proceed with the change and the points will be available to use instantly.

**With points bookings those are refundable so even if you book a Wanna Get Away fare for a domestic flight and later on you need to cancel the $5.60/$11.20 security fee can be refunded and the points will go back to the account. So if you don't care that much about being A1-A15 you can book the wanna get away and save a bunch of points.

If I book "Wanna Get Away" one-way tickets now and the fare goes down I understand I can rebook and get a credit.  Could I then use that credit toward the purchase of my return flights BEFORE I actually travel the first leg?
