At the ticket counter/gate you can buy upgraded boarding which is different than EB check in.
EB check in must be purchased at least 36 hours before your flight.

You will have been checked in 36 hours prior with Early Bird - if you mean collect your boarding pass then either will work fine, kiosk or at the counter.
Or mobile, or print at home.
Even though the position is assigned at T-36 hours, you still can only login to check your pass and print it or download after T-24 hours.

It's based off of when you bought EB those who buy EB a month in advance should receive a better position than the person who bought it a week in advance. You would also be assigned a position after the A List customers.
