If weather causes you to be rescheduled you are accommodated as space allows. The next flight may already be full.

Since boarding positions are assigned at least 24 hours prior to departure if you get on the next flight you would end up with a boarding position at the end of the already assigned positions. If you paid for an upgraded boarding position on the flight that was rescheduled you may be able to Contact Customer Relations and request a refund since you were not able to use the upgraded boarding position. The same could also be said for purchases of EarlyBird Check-In. Of course, I cannot speak for Southwest, but I suspect you would be able to receive some compensation.

Is it faster/better/recommended  to wait for delay to end or pay out of pocket next flight?

Solution

If you have the money to just go ahead and buy another flight at last minute prices then you can do whatever you want. It just depends when the next flight is. Some places only have one or two flights a day while others are more frequent.
