Last minute boarding advance

I'm told that you can check at the gate for any openings in the early boarding range and move up for better positioning with an additional $40 due. How does this work?

If you booked your flight but did not purchase early bird or have not purchased business select. You can upgrade your boarding to A1-A15 for 40$ if the space is avaliable. If you paid the complete fair, you MAY be able to upgrade to business select for a smaller price, but again, with space avalibility. It's like a last minute clearance sale for a better boarding position to fill up the business select seating for those who did not select to purchase it prior to booking/checking in for their flight!

For some reason I was thinking that the price could vary (a little higher) for longer flights, but I don't recall for sure.
