Hello,
I booked a flight in June for SJD and used 34,086 points for the round trip fare plus the taxes and fees of $97.21. I also booked my husband on a companion pass for just the taxes and fees. Now the same flights are showing only 23,868 round trip. Is there any way to get those 10,218 points back without penalty? For instance, I have to cancel his flight in order to change my flight, but if I cancel his flight, will I lose the $97.21 I paid for the taxes and fees? Thanks for any help!

You can call in and have the rep make the adjustment for you.
Alternately, you could cancel flight online and request refund of the taxes (or they be held as travel funds) then rebook your flight at the lower price (use the "change flight" function), and then add his companion ticket back (using the travel funds to pay the taxes if they've been held that way).
There is a risk of the fare changing during this process... I'd just call. Hope this helps!

Kudos for being mindful of preserving your points!
As was stated, you can absolutely do this, and you should! It has saved us lots of points over the years.
For the record, you can do the same when cash prices go down.
Happy flying!
