Rebooking revenue flights as companion flights?

Hello! I am taking a trip with mr daughter in May 2023, but will book the flight next week (Oct 2022). I’m not sure if I’ll have enough points to cover both flights, I may have to book one on my SW card. I do plan on opening two business card accounts in December 2022 and should earn a companion pass by March 2023. Does anyone know if I can switch a revenue ticket to a companion ticket?

Solution

You can always cancel a ticket, up to 10 minutes prior to departure, then rebook as a companion. How it's refunded depends on the fare type.

beware.

The number of points required to qualify for companion pass will increase to 135,000 effective 1/1/23

Looks like the OP has a SW credit card, and should receive a 10k qualifying pts credit.
