does a credit have to be used within a year or can you book something within the years time but travel past the year anniversary ????

Travel must be completed within one year of the original purchase date.

All travel must be completed by the expiration date!  If you purchased a flight and had to cancel, the expiration date is not the flight date but the date you purchased the ticket.
