Travel funds to Luv voucher 100.00 fee

Question: Do travel funds have to be expired in order to pay the 100.00 fee to convert to Luv voucher?

Or can you simply call, plead your case, (my circumstance is Covid related/employees listed as passenger) pay the 100.00, receive your voucher and be on your way?

Thanks in advance smart people!

Yes your LUV voucher has to be expired to request the extension with the $100 deduction from customer relations.

**tip: If your voucher is not expired and you know you will travel within the next 2 years you can book a flight with the voucher where you use all the funds (if you have a $200 voucher find a flight for just over $200) and you pay the taxes (LUV vouchers won't cover taxes) then cancel the flight and your voucher will become a travel fund valid for 2 years (valid until September 7th 2022) and you can then request the money you paid for the taxes to be refunded as long as you cancel within 24 hours of booking. keep in mind whoever you book the ticket for with the voucher would be the only one able to use the funds. I would book the ticket then a minute later cancel that way you can get your taxes refunded to the credit card. The expiration date of the funds will usually be updated overnight but could take a couple days at most so don't panic when it tells you it expires sooner than Sept. 7 2022 right when you cancel.

Solution

Generally, yes. Once expired, you have 6 months in which to request the Travel Funds be reissued as a Voucher, which will be valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and the fee is (currently) $100, which is deducted from the value of the funds.

There may be a better solution for you however. At some point in the future, Southwest will allow the conversion of covid-19 related Travel Funds into Rapid Reward points, at no fee. Those points could then be used to book travel for anyone. My understanding is that the named passenger on the funds will be in control of the RR points, as they will be held in their account -- so this may or may not work for your specific situation.

If it doesn't work for you, and you do need to access the funds more quickly, it may be worth reaching out to Customer Relations to see if they can make an exception to the expiration requirement.
