Which is cheaper? Buying a one-way or a round trip?

I always check both prices, before booking. Having said that, you can go to the low far calendar and see the prices for each month for every leg - actuals that don't change. Other airlines change the price when you pick different flights, SW is upfront and shows you the costs. The only extra cost when checking out on SW will be the taxes or if you pick early bird you will be charged that at check out.
Hope this helps.

Southwest prices their fares per leg. The price is exactly the same, one-way or round-trip.

There is no difference: 1 round rip = sum of 2 one-ways; I personally prefer buying two one-ways instead of one round trip for flexibility so that If I want to change one segment, I do not have to touch the other segment; as you may know, there is no change fees on Southwest, which makes it easy; you would still have to pay the difference if the replacement fare is higher.
