My almost-18 year old has flown many times, but is flying alone next month. The "young traveler" rules seem to say that child must be met at the destination by a parent/guardian, at the gate. How strict is this rule? Can my child instead just walk to the exit and meet friends, as if it were 2 months from now, and child was 18 ? What would happen if no parent/guardian meets the 17-yr old at the destination ? Child is very mature and capable of getting self to the correct airport exit doors. Thank you!

There are no rules or restrictions for anyone age 12 and up. The requirement to be met at the gate is for unaccompanied minors which Southwest considers to be ages 5-11.
