Young Traveler - how does it work?

I just booked a flight for my 14 year old neice to come visit me.  On SW website it states:

"You will need the following information when making your YT reservation:

  • The child's full name
  • Your relationship to the child
  • The child’s address
  • Telephone number(s), including area code
  • The child's date of birth
  • Information about both the parent/guardian dropping off and the one picking him/her up
  • Contact information for an alternate designee at the child's destination"

However I wasn't asked any of this information when I booked.  Just her name, age, and a contact person.  When would we provide the above info?  My sister (her mother) will be dropping her off and I will be picking her up.  Sorry if this seems obvious but I have never done this before and want everything to go smoothly. My neice has a ton of experience flying alone but on a different airline and at different airports.

I also plan on getting an 'escort pass' to be able to pick her up at the gate.  This is the first time she has been here and the airport can be a tad confusing, even for adults, so I want to be able to meet her.  How difficult is it to get one of these?  Is there anything I need to do before hand.  The SW website makes it sound as if I would just need to go the Ticket counter and ask for one - but don't they need some kind of proof?

Thank you for any help that can be given.

Whoever drops her off at the departure airport will need to provide that info when checking in at the airport, in order for them (and you) to get the Escort Pass.

Very likely you will have no issues in getting the pass, but be aware that TSA can tell carriers to stop issuing them at times when there are significant backups at security or any other TSA problems. It's rare, but it does happen.

Otherwise, be aware that, unlike Unaccompanied Minor service, "Young Travelers" is not so much a service that Southwest provides (there is no extra fee, and they don't actually provide anything such as monitoring the traveler) as much as it is just the name they use for children ages 12-17 traveling alone.

How do you book a Young Traveler? When I try to book regularly, all it says is ADULT (2+) Two and older isn't a adult ppl!

to book a YT reservation you would select an adult (since they are over 2 years old) and when you click through the payment screen it would ask you to fill out the info for the YT after you click purchase since then it would see this is a YT.

You could also call reservations at 800-435-9792 and they can help you book it as well with no over the phone booking fees.

Hope this helps
