I bought a ticket and paid for it.
My plans changed (seminar cancelled) well in advance of the departure departure date,
I notified southwest of cancellation.
I received a notice with a deadline to use the credit (not a cash refund of my own money, or it expires. It expired, now do I have any claim to receive my money or buy another ticket?
How can a refund of my own money expire?

Hi @Bobby1311,
If you purchased a Wanna Get Away fare, you would have one year from the original date of purchase to complete travel using those funds. If the funds have expired, they can no longer be used.
