This episode comes in two (shorter) segments. Of everything to pick from, the first part was recorded on my way to Las Vegas, when I hosted an inflight contest to guess how many bags of peanuts Southwest Airlines gives out in a typical week. Then I have a wonderful interview with Sofia Proll, a Southwest Flight Attendant.

I don’t mean Red Belly Radio, either. This happened to me on March 17, when our own Brian Lusk, a Manager in Communications, was on Marketplace. Marketplace is a show by American Public Media and airs across the country on National Public Radio. And I had that Hey, I know that guy on the radio moment! They were doing a show called “Meetup, Tweetup, Post, Comment, Sell!” and it was about emerging and interactive media. Since Southwest is a major player in this space with our Nuts About Southwest blog and now our SWALife Interactive site for our Employees, Brian was asked for a comment. The nice people at Marketplace agreed to let me replay this, Give it a listen.

On this episode of Red Belly Radio features our CEO, President, and Chairman of the Board, Gary speaking on Leadership—trust me on this, he knows a thing or two about it. Hear Gary answer the question: “How do you define Leadership?” and “What makes it most difficult to execute that philosophy?”

Yes, I realize this is the 97th episode of Red Belly Radio and it is some quality podcasting about Southwest Airlines and the stuff that goes on there. So why am I just now welcoming the Employees? Well Red Belly Radio has always been available as a podcast through iTunes, and can be found with a blog on BlogSouthwest.com, but now Red Belly Radio is available on the new homepage of our intranet, SWALife! If you would like to send me a note or suggest a show topic you can always email me at redbellyradio@wnco.com.

I mean I asked around and I really tried to think of a company where the Top Leader goes out to the company, address the group (open to any Employee) and then take questions and answers. Okay, there are probably several I am not thinking of, but of the ones that I am not thinking of, how many of the Employee groups tailgate before it? Only one that I know of—Southwest Airlines! Tents, grilling, music, bands—everything needed for a successful tailgate party—before going in to hear Gary Kelly, our President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. He gives a prepared speech and answer questions—any question! But that is not what this podcast is about. This episode of Red Belly Radio is about the party before what has become more like a concert than a corporate message. Photo: Employees gathered under a tent before Gary's Message to the Field.

This is a “Best Of” and it is timely. How, you may ask? Because it is about how planes are deiced and with all the winter weather we have had I know I could use a refresher.

I'd like to apologize to the people of Philadelphia. As a fourth-generation Texan, and someone who has actually only eaten only one cheesesteak in Philadelphia, I got my facts wrong about what "wit" means. "Thank you for correcting my English." (A line from Trading Places set in Philadelphia.)

I won't actually pick a city of preference, since I have never been to Boston, but I have to say them cheesesteaks is tasty.

[asset|aid=240|format=image|formatter=asset|title=RBRiPodLogoSmall.gif|width=180|height=179|resizable=true|align=right]What’s better, a Philly “cheesesteak wit” or Boston baked beans? To properly eat a cheesesteak, there is a certain stance one should take in order to not spill on one’s shirt. Cheesesteak: one. Boston Baked beans have been around a lot longer than the cheesesteak. Beans: One. Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are usually credited with inventing the cheesesteak sandwich by serving chopped-up steak on hoagie rolls in the early 1930s. Ironically, it did not originally have cheese. Hmmm. Another one to Beans since the name did not match the original dish. In 1952, Cheez Whiz was first marketed and has now become a common option on the sandwich and is traditionally ordered as a “Cheesesteak Wit” meaning with cheese. Clever term and very local: Cheesesteak two. Don’t you just love Wikipedia? So we are all tied up at two. The winner? The flying public of course! Southwest Airlines announced new service between Cheesesteak and Beans—Philadelphia and Boston to most people—and a sweet introductory price as well. Maybe not as sweet as those maple syrup-flavored Beans, you could save a lot of beans. My guest on this episode of Red Belly Radio is Paul Flannigan and he tells us all about the new gates added to the Philadelphia International Airport; how all of Southwest flights are now in one terminal; and what kind of food to expect when you get there. But wait, there’s more! It is not just flights between Philadelphia and Boston, there are also flights to Manchester, and Providence—both in the Boston area! Could this episode get any bigger? If it did, you’d need two iPods to listen to it.

This episode of Red Belly Radio is about our Culture—well, one aspect anyway—parties. I recorded this under the bridge between terminals at the Las Vegas airport. Not as troll-like as it sounds, the bridge provided shade for a celebration that Davern, one of our Culture Ambassadors (yes we have those) explains. As promised, this week’s episode of Red Belly Radio is the second half of an interview between Peter Cappelli, a professor with the MBA program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, asked if Colleen, our President Emeritus, would do a little Q&A for his MBA students. This is the second half of the interview, the first half was from January 6, 2010. Peter asks Colleen “How do you see Southwest competing going forward?” and “What is the biggest risk you face?”

[asset|aid=240|format=image|formatter=asset|title=RBRiPodLogoSmall.gif|width=180|height=179|resizable=true|align=right]Perhaps you have heard that Southwest Airlines sometimes offers special flight segments between certain cities for really big events? It’s true! In this case, we are offering extra flights from New Orleans and Indianapolis to Fort Lauderdale for some big event that is going on in Florida in early February. This episode of Red Belly Radio is about how we are able to schedule those flights (after all we don’t have a lot full of planes to pick from) and a little about how charters work. You can’t stay home and watch this on TV, you will have to click and listen or go to iTunes and subscribe to Red Belly Radio.

Peter Cappelli, a professor with the MBA program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, asked if Colleen, our President Emeritus, would do a little Q&A for his MBA students. And he asked if I would video it so that he could show the class (and I assume future classes). I said “Why not?” and Colleen said “Why not?” and before long I was recording Colleen sitting at her desk talking to the phone. Award-winning video? Perhaps not. Good answers from questions like “How you got to where you are now?” and “Give us a sense of some of the things the Company does do keep things fun?” and more? Definitely. This the first of two parts, but the second part won’t be for a few weeks. I’ll let you know when I release that, but for now give this first part a listen.

In it, you will learn the difference of Centrifugal and Centripetal forces and about the energy required to move 321,300 tons through the air. BTW, that is about four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the actual Queen). (Did I really need to point that out?)
