It worked very well for us. We flew from CA to IN with a transfer in Denver and we used 6 of those Home Depot heavy-duty large boxes (18"x18"x24", $4 each). They all arrived in good shape. I think the trick is to use enough packing tapes to secure the openings. One of the boxes was opened by TSA and was re-packed very nicely with no issues. We put plastic wrap on two of the boxes but found out it wasn't really necessary and it actually made it more difficult to move them. I would definitely do it again.

The FAA does not allow lithium batteries in checked luggage. So although you can put your Roomba in your checked bag, you would need to first remove the battery and carry it on the plane with you.
