Hi everyone! I've been flying with Southwest for years but this is the first time I've had a crazy short layover and was wondering what to expect!
Some background, I'm flying to my home airport (SMF). I was initially going to fly direct, but my partner (coming from ATL) and I ended up changing flights so we were arriving at SMF at the same time. It just so happens we both have the same layover in LAS. While my partner's layover is about 2 hours, mine is only an hour from the expected Arrival of my BUR flight and Departure of our SMF flight.
Do you guys have any tips, advice, warnings, etc. to help alleviate my anxiety about this connection? Thanks in advance!
Hello!
I frequent both LAS and SMF from SoCal and really enjoy riding those glass elevators at SMF!
I agree that 1 hour may be a little tight for a connection at LAS given Southwest's terminal at LAS spans both the B and C gate concourses, both can get very crowded, and Southwest boards at 30 minutes prior. That leaves a 30 minute window to transverse between the gates and be ready at boarding time if your flight arrives on time. If the first leg of your flight is delayed and if you'll need to cross over between the B and C concourses to connect (e.g. Gate C11 to Gate B22 or vice versa), things will get very tight due to the long walk through the terminal.

Thankfully, there are multiple Southwest departures daily between LAS and SMF, usually anywhere from 8-11 one-way non-stop's daily depending on the day of the week. If you end up missing your connection due to a delay, you should be able to speak to a Customer Service Agent at any of the SW gates at LAS for a same-day standby onto the next non-stop flight to SMF should your flight from BUR is early enough in the day but arrives late and misses the connection. Just note that peak travel demand from LAS to SMF is Sunday's and Monday's where the flights can fill up.
Given this circumstance, I would see if you can travel with your personal item bag and carry-on luggage only. If you have additional items to return home, I would have them shipped to your destination at Sacramento via a guaranteed service so that you don't get separated from your belongings in case of a missed connection.
As an alternative, SW also offers free same-day standby for all fares and there are also multiple non-stop departures daily from BUR to SMF. If your outbound BUR-LAS leg is delayed while at BUR and you feel you may miss your connection at LAS, you can ask a rep at BUR to check the status of the non-stop's to SMF and put you on standby for a direct flight to SMF from BUR at no difference in fare.
Hope this helps!
