Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, June Squibb, Marisa Tomei and Olivia Wilde are not the only stars gracing the silver screen this holiday season. Southwest’s bold new look makes an appearance in the witty holiday comedy, Love The Coopers.
Love The Coopers follows the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.
Southwest signage is featured as a back drop for the character of Eleanor (played by Olivia Wilde) who makes her way home for the holidays. Although a snowstorm is to blame for some delayed travel, she encounters an unlikely surprise (sorry, we’re not giving it away). You will have to check out the movie for the big reveal, releasing in theatres tomorrow!
At Southwest, we are well aware that the hustle of holiday travel can be crazy, but here are a few tips to help make your Holiday travel just a bit more pleasant:
1. Pack smart and pack light, that’s holiday traveling done right!
Before you hit the slopes or nestle up to a loved one’s fireplace, remember to pack light and limit yourself to one carry-on bag (plus one small, personal item). If you really need to bring an extra winter coat have no fear, as your first two checked Bags Fly Free® (baggage weight and size limits apply).
2. Make travel changes and keep tabs on your trip using your mobile device.
If you’re extending your vacation with the in-laws by a few days (don’t laugh) you can quickly make travel changes on the fly with Southwest’s mobile site or our easy-to-use mobile app. The mobile app is available for Apple iOS devices via the App Store and for Android Devices on Google Play.
3. Shovel that driveway and leave the house early.
It’s crucial that you give yourself plenty of extra time to travel to the airport to avoid heightened Customer traffic during the holiday season. Snow or shine, we always recommend checking the status of your flight before you head to the airport, as well as our suggested airport arrival times and ticket counter hours listed by airport location.
4. If you’re checking bags, check out Express Bag Drop.
To speed up your baggage check in, try Express Bag Drop (available in select cities), a separate line that lets Customers who already have a boarding pass check their bag with less of a wait.
Traveling with an essential item? A gift for your second Uncle twice removed perhaps? Prior to boarding, see a Customer Service Agent at the gate to check any extra or oversized carry-on items, baby items such as strollers and car seats, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, or scooters.
5. Your wheels facing out, so our wheels can go up.
We know you’re ready to get a taste of Grandma’s sweet potato casserole, or hit the slopes with your best friends, but remember to follow all boarding procedures to make sure boarding goes smoothly. During peak travel times like this, the overhead bins can get a little crowded. Remember to store large items (roller bags, suitcases, duffel bags etc.) in the overhead bins. Place roller bags with wheels facing out. Stow smaller personal items under the seat in front of you (purses, laptop cases, and backpacks).
6. Plan your pick up spot ahead of time. Your holiday trip is about to begin!
Navigating a crowded airport can be tricky. Coordinate with your companions and decide on a central meeting location at the airport ahead of time. If you are picking someone up from the airport, be sure to review our travel policies online. If you are picking up an unaccompanied minor or someone needing extra assistance, you must obtain a non-passenger escort pass from the ticket counter to be allowed through the security checkpoint.

We look forward to seeing you onboard this holiday season and hope we can make your journey home a little easier. Who knows - maybe you will encounter a unique surprise just like Eleanor!

At Southwest, I have the pleasure of working on our Local Advertising Team. We’re the ones responsible for taking our brand to each and every one of our more than 70 destinations across the country. When I heard that our next big city initiative would be Milwaukee, I couldn’t contain my excitement! Every city has its own special story, and I couldn’t wait to uncover Milwaukee’s.
Working with our Marketing Planning and Customer Insights Teams, as well as our ad agency, GSD&M, we compiled tons and tons of insight on the Milwaukee market. After weeks and weeks of data, analysis and research galore, you know what the funny thing was? The more we learned about Milwaukee, the more we saw… Ourselves!
Southwest Airlines and Milwaukee sure have a lot in common; in fact, you could say we’re cut from the same cloth. The people of Milwaukee take pride in a job well done and don’t need a lot of recognition. They do what’s right because well… it’s what’s right. And they’ve been called the “salt of the earth.” Call me partial, but I would like to think those are all qualities that describe our Employees, too! I think this is going to be a beautiful relationship, Milwaukee!
So, we put together an advertising campaign celebrating the people of Milwaukee, right along with our Employees that work there. The ads are running now, and next time you go to the airport, you might recognize some of those smiling faces! Yep, all of the Employees featured in the commercials hail from the MKE Station, and are working hard to bring YOU that one-of-a-kind Southwest Customer Service. In fact, take a look at it for yourselves at the end of this post.
We are calling our effort “Wheels Up, Milwaukee,” and we hope to inspire this jewel of a city to think of us first for their air travel purchases. After all, we are mighty proud of our 32 daily nonstop departures to 16 cities across our system. Plus, we offer connecting service to an additional 46 cities all over the country, all on our big, comfy 737s.
Milwaukee, I hope you enjoy this advertising campaign as much as I enjoyed working on it. It was a pleasure getting to know your awesome city on such a deep level. By the way, anyone know where you can get cheese curds in Dallas?
Oh, and one more thing:
Wheels up, Milwaukee.

Did you know all of the Employees featured in Southwest commercials are actual Employees? We don't use actors to do the job of what we know best. When we need Employees for a commercial, we put out a casting call asking for the best, brightest, and most energetic Southwest Airlines has to offer. And, our Employees ALWAYS deliver. With over 1,200 applications and 200 Employees auditioned, this was a huge undertaking we are so proud to share with you. What a tremendous experience! Our hat’s off to everyone who let it all hang out at the auditions. We always thought we had the best Employees in the industry, but we were even surprised at just how amazing it was to work with them through this process. We met so many wonderful people as they waited for their turns, and all of them had such passion for the Company, we were in awe. We were all humbled by the fact that it takes so many people to run an airline; we had such a great representation of Employees with so many different job descriptions that it was a great opportunity to learn from one another. By the end of the three casting days spent in Houston, we can honestly say we made some great friends from all across the country. The Directors asked them to do everything but stand on their head. They sang, they danced, they played air guitar, and above all, they were themselves. All our Employees lay it out there for the Customer on a daily basis, and this group of Employees raised the bar for everyone else moving forward. It was a lot of fun and we cannot wait for you to see the new commercials – coming SOON! To see a Behind the Scenes of our Auditions click HERE
