Days at Southwest Airlines can be busy, so sometimes it’s nice to have a distraction—especially if it’s a cute and cuddly one. Employees at Ft. Lauderdale were recently treated to some puppy time after Customer Vivanne arrived for a flight to Dallas with her dog, Roxy. A bit scared of her first flight, Roxy started to yelp and Vivanne decided it would be a good idea to deplane until Roxy could be calmed down. They were booked on a later flight and, while they waited in the gate area, they quickly became very popular with Customers and Employees around them.
We loved the opportunity to play with little Roxy. After some playtime, Roxy was back to her old self. That’s when Vivanne had a new idea; maybe there was someone here that would be willing to adopt Roxy. It wasn’t long before Customer Service Agent James fell in love with Roxy and decided to take her home. A nearby Customer overheard what was happening and exclaimed, “I love Southwest Airlines, you are always doing the right thing and always helping People!”
James changed the pup’s name to Lily, who is enjoying her new home. “She’s living the dream,” James says.
The experience made me realize why dogs truly are “man’s best friend” because this cute puppy made me realize to appreciate the little things in life!

November was National Peanut Butter Month (if you didn’t know, now you do). I LUV peanut butter. Peanut butter takes me back to my childhood, when my Mom, the best Mom in the world, would make us all peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She would cut them in half, and usually one of my brothers would run by, grab a half, and eat it. When the Broward Food Pantry, in Fort Lauderdale, told us about their collection for November, we were excited to jump in and help. We set up boxes in each Southwest & AirTran Department at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, and marked them “Show the LUV, bring in a TUB." Turns out, lots of people were willing to pitch in! We collected 75 tubs of peanut butter that we dropped off at our Broward Food Pantry. We were very proud to team up with the food pantry to help those in our Community!

It's a big deal when you get something new. A new haircut, a new car, all milestones. But WOW, we got a brand new plane! In my short fifteen years with the Company, I've seen some changes over the years, but this change is something special. This red belly plane is a little different from the norm (and a lot different in size). When I first saw it pulling in, I was so proud. When I went on the plane, the wow-factor was off the charts. My first thoughts: clean, spacious, and very long! We are very honored here in Ft. Lauderdale to be one of the stations to take care of this new addition to our family. I think the coolest part is to see how excited everyone is, and ready for this new adventure. We get two 737-800 aircraft a day, and each time we are all there, ready to help out. Recently, a Flight Crew was at a different gate and they got word one of the 737-800's was here, and ran over to see it. This special bird has significant meaning for Southwest Airlines. We keep growing, and sky's the limit! It is awesome to know that we are moving forward and moving with this brand new, beautiful aircraft model.

Southwest Airlines is known for many great things, and our Flight Attendants would be one of them. I recently took a flight and captured an awesome trio that illustrates just how great our Crews are. The FUN started shortly after we took off from FLL. A Customer was having a birthday, so the Flight Attendants (Lori, Tina, and Karin, pictured above) made him a crown, and crooned Happy Birthday to him. Lori, Tina, and Karin didn't stop there. They also took such great care of a little baby who had an ear ache, in between pausing in the cabin simply to speak with Customers. They wrapped up the flight with a landing song upon arrival in HOU. I had to deplane in HOU to connect another flight, but I didn't want to leave--thanks to Lori, Tina, and Karin. Their smiles were contageous, their service was excellent, and they captivated all their Customers. That bunch just so happened to include me, an observant Southwest Employee in plain clothes, who doesn't have to look far to discover another great example of why I love to work here. A huge thank you to every one of our Crew Members who fly each day and do it ALL for LUV!

This spring, an opportunity presented itself to assist with our local National Wildlife Refuge--Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge near Ft. Lauderdale. I thought, “WOW, I would LUV to be a part of it!!” This wildlife refuge is the last northernmost portion of the Everglades. We learned that the Loxahatchee Refuge is home to the American alligator and the critically endangered Everglade snail kite. In any given year, as many as 257 species of birds may use the Refuge's diverse wetland habitats. I grew up in Florida, and absolutely love my state (I was so excited, proud and had waited years for a Florida One plane!). The outdoor life, plants, and little creatures are something I grew up with and have always wanted to help preserve. We contacted our local Refuge and set up a day and time to come out and get down to business. They were very excited about us coming to assist for the day. We arrived in the morning and they had several events planned for us. Several trees were donated to the Refuge, and we had the duty of planting each one. We grabbed our shovels and started digging —it wasn't long before we worked up a sweat! The trees were pretty tall and had a big root base, so we had to dig a deep enough hole for the trees new home. Next, we were off to the butterfly trail that needed new mulch. Along with our Refuge friend, Dave, we grabbed bags of mulch off the truck, singing our way to the trail where we emptied the bags and spread it around to fill in the trail. As we worked on the trail, we saw many butterflies fluttering around on all the magnificent plants and beautiful flowers. It's as if they were there to welcome us!! After we finished the trail, Dave invited us in to check out their nature exhibit. They have an interactive wildlife show where you sit on a model of an airboat like you are traveling through the Everglades, viewing all the alligators, birds, and other wildlife. It was really cool!! We had time to meet some of the other volunteers, and Dave invited us back anytime. I can’t wait. Southwest Airlines is the official airline of the National Wildlife Refuge Association. To support wildlife recovery efforts in the Gulf, Southwest is donating $1 from each EarlyBird Check-In™ purchase, up to $100,000, through Oct. 4. For more information about the EarlyBird Check-In giving program, visit www.southwest.com/nwra .
