As you may have seen last month, Southwest partnered with Cole Swindell, who performed his hit song, “You Should Be Here,” written in honor of his father, on a packed Live at 35® flight from Los Angeles to Nashville. While the inflight performance was certainly moving for everyone onboard, we didn’t want it to end there. So, we launched a contest to give winners the opportunity to tell us where they should be with their father figure and to take them on an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere we fly.
We received thousands of meaningful entries, but one that really stood out to us was from Paula:
“I would love to take my dad to Washington D.C. to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. As an Air Force Vet himself, who now suffers from Parkinson’s and mild dementia, I know this trip would bring him so much happiness! I would love to see that smile on his face again! Love my daddy.”
This past weekend, Paula and her father, Paul, traveled from Nashville to Washington D.C. to not only celebrate Father’s Day, but also to celebrate Paula’s 50 th birthday. Everyone involved made it a very special experience for Paul and Paula, from our Flight Attendants who serenaded Paula with “Happy Birthday” and a toilet paper cake onboard the flight, to our Pilots and Customers alike who thanked and appreciated Paul for his service, to our Partners at Honor Flight Network who allowed Paul and Paula to tour the memorials with their group. It truly was a weekend that they will never forget.

When launching Tennessee One—Southwest’s newest and eleventh state-dedicated aircraft—just a few weeks ago, we knew we wanted to do something a little different to honor our Customers and Employees in The Volunteer State. It didn’t take long for us to realize that music was the key to staying in tune with the Tennessee crowd. After all, what could be more fitting than incorporating live music into (and in-between) our celebrations in “Music City” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll”?
Following performances by Maren Morris and A Thousand Horses in Nashville, and with no more details than what time the event would end, some of our most loyal local Community Partners, Corporate Sales Customers, Social Influencers, and even four of our original Nashville Employees were invited onto the surprise flight of their lives from Nashville to Memphis!
Shortly after take off, Murfreesboro, TN, native and award-winning country music singer, Chris Young, took to the front to perform “I’m Comin’ Over,” the debut single from his fifth album, for the plane of lucky guests. However, the surprises didn’t stop there! He then brought out Cassadee Pope, winner of the third season of The Voice, to croon their newest duet, “Think of You.”
With only two microphones, two guitars, two amps, and one 737-700 PA system, Chris and Cassadee kicked off the first Live at 35® concert of 2016 and the first to ever be specifically hosted on a state livery aircraft. We’re excited to count these stars among our growing list of high-flying performers and look forward to keeping the music playing, whether celebrating a new state livery or surprising our Customers on a regularly-scheduled flight.

The following blog was written by Carly Vickery, the mother of Braely, whose family attended the 2013 Kidd’s Kids trip. Braely was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta at six weeks old and underwent two open heart surgeries before the age of 3.
Having undergone so much at such an early age, Braely is one of the strongest people I have ever met. She constantly strives to keep up with other children her age in both sports and other activities, and now 14 years old, you would have no idea that anything is wrong by just looking at her. We try to live our lives as normally as possible, however, with three children and the high cost of medical equipment and bills, big family trips are out of the question for us.
In the fall of 2013, our family received the surprise of a lifetime—we were selected to attend the Kidd’s Kids trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. My husband and I never could have dreamed of taking our family on a trip like this. This was our first true family vacation, and it wasn’t just any vacation; it was first class all the way!
Our trip started with a chartered Southwest Airlines plane filled with Kidd’s Kids families. I can’t say enough about Southwest – they helped everyone with their bags, children with wheelchairs, and even let the kids see the controls in the cockpit before takeoff. Every kid was a superstar! Once we got to Disney World, Kidd’s Kids was so amazing to us. They took care of all our expenses: hotel, meals, park passes, and countless gifts and souvenirs. Kidd’s Kids also brought a medical staff team who made it possible for Kidd’s Kids, parents, and siblings to enjoy rides that a medical child would not typically get to ride. They made sure that everyone on the trip—not just the Kidd’s Kids—was taken care of. After all, this trip is meant for families to forget about doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, and treatments...and to just have fun. It is, by far, one of the best memories of our lives!
Southwest Airlines has proudly supported The Kraddick Foundation for the past eight years by not only providing the chartered flight and tickets for the Kidd’s Kids trip, but also by hosting the Kidd’s Kids Day telethon at Southwest’s headquarters. Of course, this doesn’t even mention the many Southwest Employees who have a heart for this organization including the flight crews who volunteer their time onboard the charter flights and the nearly 150 Employees who give their time working the telethon and the sendoff event.
In 2014, Kidd’s Kids Day raised $420,000 through telephone, text, and online donations with more than $41,000 of those total donations coming from the telethon. The money raised on Kidd’s Kids Day directly funds the Kidd’s Kids trip and without the generous donations from The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show listeners and fans, this once in a lifetime opportunity would not be possible for families like The Vickerys.
If you would like to donate to the 2015 Kidd’s Kids trip, please call 888-SWA-KIDZ on Wednesday, October 21 st from 6:00am to 12:00pm CST, text KIDD to 52000 to donate $10, or make an online donation in the amount of your choice at www.KiddsKids.com.

The most subtle shift to cooler weather is always a blatant indicator of one thing: college football season. And in Dallas, Texas that means it's time for the Red River Showdown--the big game between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners! This is the only time of the year when the spirit of collegiate pride marks a cultural divide here at Southwest Airlines' Dallas Operations. You're either a Longhorn or a Boomer Sooner at the annual Pigskin Plane Pull!
This is the fourteenth year that Southwest Employees have transformed into plane pulling warriors as they represent their favorite school, harness their inner strength, and pull an 83,000-pound Southwest Airlines 737 aircraft down a 50-foot stretch of tarmac.
Fueled by a longstanding rivalry, 14 Southwest Employees pulled for either the Longhorns or the Sooners to see which team would cross the goal line first and earn a years’ worth of bragging rights. What else was on the line? Victors also received tickets to the Texas State Fair, as well as the highly anticipated Red River Showdown football game.
Both teams were also joined by a few special pullers this year. UT aimed to be victorious for the second year in a row by starting both The Great Donovan of The Musers at Sportsradio 1310 The Ticket and former UT player Quan Cosby, who represented the Dallas chapter of Texas Exes. On the other hand, OU sought revenge by including Junior Miller of The Musers and former OU player Tommie Harris, who represented the Dallas Club of OU, in their starting lineup. With teams that strong, it was destined to be a close race! But there can only be one winner.
Big congratulations to the Oklahoma Sooners team for winning this year’s Pigskin Plane Pull with an astounding time of 34.91 seconds!
Whether you were decked out in burnt orange or crimson red, we salute our mighty plane pullers for their participation and everyone who came out to cheer on their respective team. And best of luck to both teams as they kick off another year of rivalry in the Cotton Bowl this weekend!

What could be more iconic than fried chicken on a summer day?
Today is National Fried Chicken Day, and to celebrate, Southwest Airlines partnered with Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to surprise and delight some unsuspecting—and hungry—Customers in Atlanta with a picnic in the gate area.
Popeyes Brand Ambassadors handed out snack boxes filled with fried chicken strips and a biscuit for our Customers to enjoy as they waited to board their flights to New Orleans.
Popeyes also celebrated their Louisiana heritage by handing out Mardi Gras beads, bracelets and t-shirts.
At Southwest Airlines, we love showing our Customers hospitality during their travels, and partnering with Popeyes gave us a FUN way to treat our Customers with this tasty summer food staple.

We don’t judge, unless you’re pulling an 83,000-pound Southwest Airlines 737 aircraft half the length of a regulation football field! On Thursday, at Southwest Airlines in Dallas, Employees put their game faces on for the annual Southwest Airlines Pigskin Plane Pull to kick off the TX/OU weekend!
The event has taken place for thirteen consecutive years as Southwest Employees adorned in their favorite school’s colors participate in this festive, yet competitive, pep rally, alongside the cheer teams and mascots from each university.
This year, sixteen Employees pulled for either the Texas Longhorns or Oklahoma Sooners to see which Team would cross the goal line first. Tickets to the Texas State Fair, the Red River Showdown football game, and, of course, bragging rights were all on the line! Special guests Junior Miller and The Great Donovan, The Musers from local Sportsradio 1310 The Ticket, along with two of their listeners, joined the fun by pulling with our Employees.
Congratulations to the Texas team for winning this year’s Pigskin Plane Pull, with an impressive time of 37.33 seconds!
We wish both Teams luck in this weekend’s big game!

Considering the amount of time many of us have spent in airports throughout our lives, we should all be pretty fluent in the language of ‘airport lingo’ by now. However, if you’re like me, you might only consider yourself to have a working knowledge of airport lingo, rather than fluency. Between flight decks and jet bridges; terminals and concourses; and nonstop flights and direct flights—things can get a bit tricky. Here’s a little refresher course so you can confidently help a few confused travelers on your next flight!
Flight deck: This is another term for the cockpit, or the area in the front of the airplane where the Pilots sit to fly the airplane.
Jet bridge: A jet bridge is the piece of equipment that connects the airplane to the concourse. It is the area that you walk down to board the plane and walk up to deboard the plane.
Captain: The Captain is the head Pilot and the legal commander of the airplane. Captains are typically the more senior of the two pilots and traditionally sit on the left-hand side of the flight deck. They can be distinguished from a first officer by the four stripes on their shirt epaulets or jacket sleeves.
First Officer: The First Officer is the Co-Pilot and is second-in-command of the aircraft. First Officers are traditionally seated on the right-hand side of the flight deck and have only three stripes on their shirt epaulets or jacket sleeves. However, they are fully qualified to operate the aircraft in all stages of flight, including takeoffs and landings, and do so in alternating turns with the captain.
Aft: This term refers to an area near the tail of an aircraft. For instance, whenever a flight attendant mentions an “aft lavatory,” she is talking about a bathroom near the back of the plane.
Ramp: The ramp is the area of the airport where aircraft are parked and refueled, and where luggage is loaded and unloaded from the plane.
Terminal: This is the part of the airport building that connects all of the different concourses. It is the area where you’ll find the check-in ticket counters, baggage claims, security checkpoints, and car rental counters. A terminal can have many concourses, and large airports often have multiple terminals.
Concourse: Concourses are corridors situated past the security checkpoints where all of the loading gates are located. This is the area of the airport where you can shop, eat, and recharge your electronics while waiting for your flight.
Customer Service Agent: Customer Service Agents (CSAs) handle all aspects of ticketing and checking in of Customers, help Customers change flight reservations, and clear standby Passengers at the gate podium.
Operations Agent: Operations Agents (Ops Agents) manage the weight and balance of the aircraft and assist with the boarding process by making boarding announcements, scanning boarding passes as Passengers enter the jet bridge, and monitoring the number of Passengers on the plane.
Nonstop Flight: This is a single flight between two airports with no stops.
Direct Flight: A direct flight makes at least one stop on the way to its final destination but the flight number stays the same. For instance, SWA flight #1260 might fly from Dallas to New York, but first stop in St. Louis. The Passengers who disembarked in St. Louis were on a nonstop flight, while the Passengers who remained on the flight from Dallas all the way to New York were on a direct flight.
