It sounds like you had the perfect storm (sorry for the pun) for a bad flying experience! I have experience a similar complex delay on another airline. Unfortunately when you mix weather (anywhere SW planes fly), a holiday, and mechanical issues, things can get tricky. I hate that you were delayed so long; I know how frustrating that must have been!

It is my understanding that when you make the purchase of the upgraded boarding, the credit will post to your credit card account automatically! This is true of the flight purchase credit. So purchase the upgraded boarding at the gate, based on availability, using your Priority card, and the credit will post after your make the purchase. Enjoy!

Southwest has a generous same day standby policy for A-Listers, and today was my first chance using the benefit! I was at the airport about 4.5 hrs before my scheduled departure, a connecting flight to Nashville from Austin thru Atlanta. I checked in with the agents at the check-in counter, and they were happy to put me on the standby list on a earlier connecting flight thru Dallas. I was #1 on the standby list, and I cleared and boarded last; fortunately, there was room for my carry on! For my second flight, I cleared as the A group was boarding, so I was able to board with A Listers after the A group...with my bag, of course! A few things to keep in mind about this benefit: 1) it is easy to use, 2) carrying on your bag makes this process much more accessible and flexible, 3) the benefit is subject to seat availability and sometimes requires some patience, and 4) as a frequent traveler for business, I appreciate that SW offers this benefit to A List members. Today, it got me home more than 4 hrs early!

It is my understanding that you will want to purchase EB for these as your elite benefits will expire at the end of 2018 if you did not requalify for A List in 2019.

I have not experienced this "constantly" with Southwest. As a matter of fact, I have seen SW be very proactive in delay situations. A few years ago, SW had a very clear problem with small delays toward the end of the day; it was a widespread issue. One day, I received a letter in the mail from SW acknowledging the problem, apologizing, and outlining the plan to correct it. Seemingly overnight, the problem was resolved! I was so impressed with the company taking ownership! There was also the time SW gave the whole plane a voucher for a delay or the time held a connecting flight just for me and welcomed me onto the plane by name. There were the many times SW has comped drinks for the entire plane after delays, and finally there was the time the SW team literally dug our plane out of the snow to get our flight out on time after a "blizzard" in Charlotte. Ours was one of a handful of planes that went out that day at one of the busier airports in the country. To be fair, I do experience delays on occasion, as any traveler does on any airline. It sounds like your situation might have to do with crew issues...you may have a plane, but you have to have a crew to operate it, and they might be delayed coming in and connecting. If you would like to find out more about the specific reason for the delay, the gate agents will be happy to tell you. You can as reach out to @southwestair on Twitter, and they can ususally provide some context as well. Good luck.

Hello! For question 1, I am not certain, but I think you would have to call SW to see if they could adjust the name on your ticket. Perhaps others here can confirm. In the future, when you book your ticket, you can confirm how the name is presented and edit as needed while booking online. For question 2, you can either call SW now and have them add it to the reservation, or the check in agents at the airport can add it for you day of travel. You can add your KTN permenantly in you SW Account > My Preferences > Personal > Edit. For question 3, there is no way to get a good answer because EB fully depends on the number of A Listers and Early Birds who will be on the plane. It is not unheard of these days for EBs to back into the B group, and it is impossible to know how that will play out each flight. It sounds like you are traveling with a child under the age of seven, so you can board with family boarding. If you want to do EB, you would want to purchase for everyone traveling with you. For me, I would not add that extra expense given the uncertainty. Happy travels!

Interesting dilemma. Playing the beginning-of-the-year Companion Pass attainment is a delicate process, and I understand your frustration with this situation! This is my GUESS -- when you hit the $1000 spend, it triggered the bonus. Yes, the fine print may say that returns could cause the bonus not to happen, but I think that is just legal protection/jargon. I appreciate that you paid attention to the details, but I would guess there is nothing that can be done; chase is in control of when those bonus points are routed to your SW account. With that said, have you considered opening the business Rapid Rewards credit card? You can't get another personal bonus at this time, but you could get the bonus from the business card. If you do anything at home like a hobby that brings in money, side job, etc., you could qualify for the business card. It is worth looking into.

Are you travelling internationally? Mobile boarding passes are not available for international travel. With that said, I would guess that you are indeed checked in and that your boarding position is secure; you will just need to get your boarding pass at the airport. More here.

This is great to hear, and thanks for sharing!!! I would recommend you reach out to Southwest on Twitter or via their contact us page to provide the feedback directly. Be sure to include your travel date and flight #. If you don’t have Twitter and would like to post that info here instead, I can send this thread to the SW Twitter team for you!

This has been discussed extensively on this site, and resptfully, your proposal would do more to hurt those who need wheelchairs and extra time to board than it would to help those who may (or may not) be faking it. Not all special needs (physical or otherwise) are visible to the eye.

A List qualifying points are earned from paid flights and from credit card BONUS points only. From SW's site: "Tier qualifying points are earned from revenue flights booked through Southwest Airlines® or through the use of the Rapid Rewards® Priority or Premier Credit Cards (1,500 tier qualifying points for every $10,000 in eligible net purchases on that card, up to 15,000 tier qualifying points per year)." All credit card points do count toward Companion Pass qualification.

@rachellake - I understand your frustration! I have had this happen with SW before as well, and it caused me to change how I travel to certain frequent business destinations. With that said, I have also experienced the opposity: a destination that only had one-stop routes became non-stop. Jackpot! SW ( and other airliens) change their routes based on many factors. Unfortunately, there may not be one specific answer in this case. If you would like to discuss the matter further with SW, I recommend reaching out to them directly here.

@Lmkel68 - can you expain what you mean by "late?" EB is two things: always a gamble, and always better than not having EB. The number of medical pre-boards, AListers, and (potentially) family boarders can make a big difference in your boarding position. This goes for AListers as well as the more occasional passengers and simply the nature of SW's boarding process.

I also agree that the flights/points will not post until after the whole trip. You can split the trips to ensure you get the outbound points in 2018! You can do that online by cancelling the return flight, holding the funds, and using the funds to rebook the return leg separately; the danger in this is that the price may have gone up. You could also call SW and see if the agents could simply split the reservation for you. Not sure if they can, but it is worth a shot. In the future, I would recommend booking any flights that straddle a calendar year separately. With SW, there is never any penalty to book separately!

Hi! Southwest's site has extensive info on this topic here. I would review this as it will likely answer lots of your questions. Note that due to their ages, these children will not have to show ID at security. Also note that children agen 2 thru 11 qualify for child fares; you have to call SW to book (1-800-435-9792). The main thing to plan for is boarding. Note that the six year old qualifies for family boarding. Per SW's site: "An adult traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding." While you may find a gate agent who would all ow you all to board as a family, I would not count on it. If everyone is book on the same reservation, then (generally), you will also be assigned consecutive boarding positions to you can board together. I was unsure by your post if you will have all the tickets booked together, however. If you all do not get boarding positions together, you will have to board with the person holding the "highest" (worst) boarding position. With some planning, you can make this work very easily! Let me know if that helps and if you would like additional detail!

Thanks for the detailed info @DancingDavidE! I totally echo having a second, smaller car seat! Our main, large car seat never has to be removed from the car, and we have one that is cheaper that travels with us. We have less concern if it is damaged, and it is SO MUCH EASIER when we get to the parking lot cause we just grab our pre-packed extra seat and go. Speaking of pre-packed: I HIGHLY recommend getting a travel bag in advance from Amazon. I have found that they typically are slightly thicker than the SW ones. You can pack it at home, again saving time. Note that SW covers loss on baby items, but they do not cover damage. With that said, we have never had any issues with damage to any baby items - stroller or car seats. We personally always check the car seat and keep the stroller with us to gate check. Finally, this page on SW's site has a link to seat dimensions if it would make you feel better to know that in advance. Happy flying!

I think that most of these points have been more than adequately made here, but I have a few thoughts to echo/add: I'm sorry you had a really rough experience! It's unfortunate, and it could have happened on any airline. I also encourage you to give SW the chance to make it right; then, evaluate how you feel about where to spend your money. If another airline is the right answer, do what is best for you! For me personally, I have flown countless miles with all the major airlines here in the US. I had status for a number of years with another carrier, and have had status with SW for a number of years now. My personal experiences have shown me that -- overall -- SW employees care for their customers and provide better customer service than the other domestic US airlines. I could tell you many stories where SW has gone above and beyond. There was the time they allowed me to change my SW flight for free when another airline's delay caused a conflict. There was the time they held my connecting flight for me and welcomed me onto the flight by name. There was the time that a baggage agent helped me with my bag and text me personally the next day with an update and an apology for the situation. I'm sorry your experiences have not been so great because I and so many folks I know experience the opposite every day on SW. Smiling employees work hard to create good experiences, and my personal experience is that they work harder when things go wrong. Regardless of the solution, I hope that you are able to find an airline that adequately meets your needs.
