If I find my flight has a lower price and I cancel it and get the credit difference can I use the credit to book the next flight even though its the same flight and booked right after the first one was canceled?

I will be booking a flight for 5 family members. I plan to use my rapid rewards points for some of the flights because I have over 17k points. What is the best way to book, all together or each person separate? And am I able to use points for flights on more than one person or just myself?
