Flying Down to Rio (Grande Valley, that is)

While "Ol' Man Winter" has settled into much of the nation, the skies are still balmy across South Texas.  Frequent contributor, Kim Seale, sent us these photos from his recent business trips to Corpus Christi and Harlingen.  For those of you digging your cars out of snow this Holiday Season, we thought you might enjoy these tropical views.  The first photo is of the USS Lexington, which is now a museum in Corpus Christi.  The next shot is on the way to Harlingen, and the thin strip of land in the distance is Padre Island.  The final shot is sunset over the Rio Grande Valley.  Thanks, Kim! These pictures are really nice. I recently had a round trip with southwest from midway to Oakland. I have few pictures to share, one of them is a picture of another southwest plane taken from the plane window and rest of them are aerial view of LA. Whome should I send my pictures to? Thanks, Arifa.

Leah, It is good to see you active on the Blog again! I hope things are going well for you and that the day you pin on that SWA Employee ID is getting closer!! If you've taken some good ones, how about sending 'em in? Besides, even if you haven't, you can fake 'em like I did. I just used a model airplane wing, some cotton balls and a small flashlight suspended over my bathtub to simulate the view over South Padre Island at sunset... LOL Kim 🙂

Leah, As Kim acknowledged, how is the SWA career path coming? I've checked out the blogs and the FA site as well and I know you had interviews for the FA position and if I'm not mistaken, recently a CSA position. I read with interest your desire and anticipation - as I can completely understand your passion and desire to work for this organization! Were you the one who also certified in ASL? I teach sign language to babies (and their caregivers) to help the babies communicate with less frustration and crying....there are so many signs to remember and I know it is quite a task to accomplish another language. Hope the New Year brings wonderful opportunity - like Kim said, send in your pictures, as there are those of us who live through the words and stories of others adventures...:) Jenny Frasco

Hi, Kim & Jenny! I'm doing well. I'd LUV to send in a picture or more, but don't know how, other than mailing. Yes, I did interview (both group & one-on-one each time) for CSA & RSA; unfortunately, I wasn't picked for training for either one! 😞 Now I have to wait until next November before trying again. Thanks for asking, though. Yes, Jenny, I do know ASL! 🙂 I'm not actually certified, but I took 4 1/2 semesters of it; I'm also in a Sunday School class for Deaf & Hard of Hearing at my church & we have an interpreter. I majored in Deaf Services & minored in Interpreting. That's really great what you do! 🙂

Leah, It ain't no big thang knowin' ASL. You should come to Dallas and spend some time on our freeways. Lotsa folks use ASL down here, but it is usually just one finger at a time... LOL Kim 🙂

I loved these pictures, it made me homesick. I moved from Brownsville in January 1987 and started working for Southwest in August of 1987... The things I miss the most about the Valley is that there is always a breeze blowing and of course the fantastic sun sets! Luv Ya! Carmen

One of our church missionaries know Southwest and Harligen very well. He told he was getting just "B"s. So I gave him some tips about increasing his chances for his "A."

Like the first photo, is that a baseball stadium in the picture near the water? Also, if you know, does Southwest offer a fear of flying program and if not could you refer me to one? I reside in NYC. --Joseph

Joseph, Thanks for asking about that stadium, as it reminded me that I was supposed to answer that same question for our Blog Master, but it slipped my mind. Yes, I've researched it, and that is Whataburger Field. The ballpark is home to the Corpus Christi Hooks, a farmteam affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Whataburger fast food chain was founded in, and is still based in Corpus Christi, so they apparently bought the naming rights. Here is a link that tells more about Whataburger Field and that includes some closer and better photos than I could get from the window of a SWA 737... http://cchooks.com/whataburger/ Thanks for asking! Kim 🙂
