So the next time you're flying on our wonderful airline, check the seat back pocket in front of you and you'll most likely find two things (other than someone's newspaper from the flight before you and the, uh, "bag"): Southwest Airlines Spirit magazine and the SkyMall catalog.   Spirit gives you fantastic articles, interviews, and great vacation ideas that you can accomplish in three days to selected cities.  Personally, I've read every one cover to cover since I've been with the Company, and I have not been disappointed--even though, I'm more of a crossword person rather than a Suduku person, but that's another post for another day.   But I'm not here to toot our horn, since the magazine toots for itself.  I'm talking about the SkyMall catalog!  If you think that you've seen it all, heard it all, or even thought of it all, I can guarantee you that this catalog will change all your preconceived notions of things you think haven't been invented yet!  Mother's Day, Father's Day, Secretary's Day, Just Because Day, you name it, and there's a gift and an idea for each one of them!   Some examples of the "wish I'da thought of that" are:  Be the life of the party with a Popdrive!  It's a combination 1GB USB flash drive and bottle cap opener!  Play music from a PC AND crack open your favorite frosty beverage at the SAME TIME!   Create mp3's from your old cassette tapes!  The Plusdeck2 mounts in one of your 5.25" drive bays and coverts your old cassettes to MP3s.  They also have a USB turntable to convert your records to mp3's.  Plays 45's and LP's (sorry, no 78's).   Then there's the SnacDaddy.........wondering where you can put your chicken bones after you're done your wings?  Wonder no more as the SnacDaddy has that covered with a tray designed to hold chicken wings and hide the bones in the center hole.   Want a great book?  Try The Lost Art of Towel Oragami!  You'll never fold a towel the same way again!   And...for the ULTIMATE in luxury, check out the deluxe golf carts:  The Cadillac Escalade and the Boyd Coddington model! 15" Rims, Alpine AM/FM/CD player with speakers, chrome tilt steering wheel, and billet grille.   And after you're done shopping, be SURE to read the Southwest Spirit magazine! Spirit is one fantastic airline magazine, I always read it before the SkyMall catalog. But the Skymall catalog is beyond interesting, there really are some wild and wonderful things. But you ever notice how once you get home, that widget you just thought was the greatest thing on earth (while you were 30,000 feet up) has lost some of its appeal upon return to terra firma? I've still given SkyMall more than a few of my "impulse purchase" dollars over the years.

My children when they were younger would entertain themselves with items out of the seatback pocket. The bag would be colored to become a hand puppet. We would do a treasure hunt, to find the most expensive item, the lowest price item, the strangest item. My youngest daughter would pull out the emergency card and ask "Who comes to get us when we land on the water?" I always hoped their was no passenger who was afraid of flying when my three year old was quizzing me.

Jedi, I assume that you are referring to a usb video game, rather than an actual defensive device for your cube. Because, as we all know, a Jedi can use the force to defend himself..... "This is not the fare you're looking for..."

Jim, We get the Spirit magazine here in reservations out in our break room. I usually read it over the timespan of a couple lunch breaks and a slow night on the phones, so whenever I fly I've already read it cover to cover. Phil, It IS a defensive device for my cube. Heck, even Luke Skywalker used a blaster every now and again. This would be great whenever Trojan Blog Boy's keychain with the USC fight song goes off. Launch! *ThUnK* Plus, it saves me the humiliation of pulling out my sartruce lightsaber in an office environment. "For great articles, there's the Spirit Magazine. For everything else, there's the SkyMall catalog." Jedi Blog Master

Jim, I think they might send the Terminator 2000 tax collector model after me to collect the taxes I haven't filed yet. My trusty however-you-spell-that-color bright yellow lightsaber will make quick work of him though, since Jedi mind tricks do not work on those models. ah, that is all you can be really certain of... Death 'n Taxes! (not necessarily in that order!) past, present or future, they'll find you! and if you dispose of the first one, there's an endless army behind :o)

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes. I don't fly quite as often as some of the people I've read here, usually once or twice a month. Southwest has long been my choice and I've been able to make use of a few Rapid Rewards trips. The first thing I do after the safety announcements is to put on my noise-cancelling headphones for hearing protection, settle in and open Spirit. After we reach 10,000 feet and the 'Portable Electronic Device' announcement is made I turn on my GPS and set it on the tray table. A couple of weeks ago I was able to read the April issue on the outbound trip and the May issue coming home. I was very pleased to see that I can now wear these headphones anytime (although I'll wait until the safety announcements are over), but then I got the real shock. I suddenly saw that a GPS receiver was no longer allowed at any time. I have a small one that I bring when I fly that lets me keep track of how fast, how high and where we are. If I see something on the ground I'm curious about I just scroll the arrow over and see what it is - a small town, a small airport, lake, river, whatever. I just kind of always like to know where we are and enjoy having that capabiity. The question is what led to the removal of this device from the 'allowed' list? I know some airlines allow it and some don't, so it's not an FAA issue, but I always hoped to see the list of those saying 'Yes' growing, not having my favorite airline suddenly join the 'No' crowd. This is probably not something a lot of people are clamoring for, but please reconsider this decision.

Boy, DB, that is quite a Ding! offer you have going there, but I can't really determine the expiration date...can you clarify for us? I'm so used to the "1,2,3, DING! for free" type of simple, straightforward offers.... Or am I just confusing DING! with the Wall Street report on candy corn futures?

Speaking of the Spirit magazine, there will be an article in the next one (I believe the next one) about TUL. Please read it-if anyone's interested! 🙂

Hey Jedi Blog Master, I was on SWA flights last week, and I saw the Cube Defender in SkyMall. It really does exist. Blog Boy

I have some more ideas of merchandise I'd LUV to see SWA sell. One of them is bumper stickers that say "I LUV SWA" & maybe "My LUV belongs to SWA." I've also thought about shirts that say Southwest Airlines in the upper left corner, & on the back they could either list all the cities the you serve, or have a map with all of the cities on them. It would probably be too hard to list all the cities, since there are so many. Maybe you could have the codes. Other ideas I have for shirts are ones that say "I LUV SWA," as well as ones that have a theme painted plane on the front; then above or below, it could have which theme it is, such as Spirit plane, Shamu, Lone Star One, etc. Maybe you could even make pillows like that-with the theme painted aircraft. Last year, I mailed a letter with my other ideas. 🙂

Is the article about TUL in this month's Spirit magazine? I thought it would be. If so, how can I get a copy? Maybe I can try to get one at my home airport, which is TUL. If it's not in it until July, then I can read it on the plane to MCO. I certainly want to keep a copy! 🙂

Never mind. I'll just ask elsewhere for a copy.

I heard that TUL will be in next month's Spirit magazine, which is perfect! I can read it on the plane! I'll still want a copy. 🙂

Oh, I forfgot to say that it will be 36 pages. i wonder if it's because this year SWA celebrates its 36th birthday? 🙂 i doubt that, but it makes me wonder. 🙂
