Going Green: Make Your Own Cleaners!

If baking soda in my fridge keeps my food fresh, and it’s in my toothpaste to make my smile bright, I recently wondered what other world problems it could solve in my own home.  Just so happens, you can save green while you clean green.  Here are a few ways to do that.

  • DIY Cleaners:  With three parts of baking soda to one part of water, you can scour those surfaces in your home.  And, with a little bit of honey and cornmeal, you can have your own hand cleanser.
  • At Home Facial: With the same three parts of baking soda to one part of water, you can use this formula to exfoliate your skin.  It’s gentle enough to use daily if needed.
  • Small Appliance Cleaner: Use about one tablespoon of dry baking soda on a flannel cloth, and with a little bit of elbow grease, you might be able to start to see your reflection in your blender or food processor.
  • Oven Cleaner: No one likes this cleaning duty, but this doesn’t sound so bad.  Sprinkle about ½ cup of baking soda (more if needed), and spray it with water.  Let it sit for several hours or overnight, and then start scrubbing those stains and spills.  Be sure to rinse with water.
  • Toilet Cleaner/Deodorizer: Sprinkle ¼ cup of baking soda in your toilet bowl and then add ¼ cup of vinegar before you scour it with your toilet brush.
