LasVegas

Beginning October 13, Dallas Love Field is FREE!  The restrictions of the Wright Amendment will be gone, ushering in nonstop destinations that span from coast to coast.   Southwest has been counting down the years and weeks (literally—we have a billboard at the Love Field entrance and a countdown clock in our Headquarters lobby) until we can say, “Goodbye, Wright Amendment. Hello, America!"   We are excited to begin this new era by serving five new nonstop destinations on October 13, followed by ten additional new nonstop destinations on November 2.  The addition of these 15 new nonstop destinations will bring Southwest to a total of 31 nonstop destinations from Love Field.

In anticipation of this momentous event, each week we will take a look at one of the cities that North Texas Customers will be able to soon visit nonstop on Southwest.  Each post is written by a Southwest Employee who is affiliated with the city and can give an insider’s view of what to see and do while visiting.  Enjoy!LUXOR 2

Collectively I’ve lived in Las Vegas for 21 years, and it’s been a blast.  Obviously, most people think of the Strip first, but there are plenty of other sites to see and activities to do.  When I first moved here in 1986, I was in awe of the Hoover Dam.  After all this time, I still am, and you can still tour the inside of the Dam.  Remember, though, ask specifically to tour the Power Plant—there is a lot of history in the construction of the dam and its structure. In terms of daily departures, Las Vegas is Southwest’s second busiest airport, and Las Vegas is no stranger to the travel industry.  It’s a great place to get a tan, explore the scenery, and find some good eats on the Strip.  With so many fun things to eat, do and see pulling you in all sorts of directions, I’m happy to recommend a few of my favorites! Your Las Vegas to-do list: To Eat:
  • Mon Ami Gabi:  Located in the Paris Hotel, Mon Ami Gabi provides a beautiful view of the Bellagio Hotel fountains from their outside patio.  With a reasonably priced menu, Mon Ami Gabi has a pick for everyone.  I recommend the Steak Roquefort and placing reservations on busy evenings.
  • Diablos Cantina:  This cantina provides a devilish atmosphere, perfect for people-watching, located right off the Strip!  Their fajitas are delicious, and you have to try their Dark Devil Cadillac Margarita.paris
To Do:
  • Downtown Fremont Street:  With a lot of history, Fremont Street provides a glimpse into Las Vegas’ past, and night visits are a must.  As the world’s largest video screen, the Viva Vision canopy showcases short entertainment spots for all ages to enjoy—just look up!
  • The Valley of Fire:  To see a colorful array of Red Rock formations, hike through the Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park.  There are a variety of trails for all hiking levels and some beautiful picnic spots.
To See:
  • Lake Mead:  Created by Hoover Dam construction, Lake Mead fluctuates water levels depending on the Dam’s outflow.  Currently, the lake hosts over 100 miles of shoreline.  Lake Mead is a great place to escape the heat of summer, when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees!
  • The Stratosphere View:  Visit the top of the Stratosphere for a spectacular view of the city.  There are some insane ride attractions and a rotating restaurant, all 1,000 feet in the air!
My City Secret:
  • Milo’s Cellar and Wine Bar:   After a short trip outside Las Vegas to Boulder City, you’ll find Milo’s Cellar and Wine Bar.  This place has everything—from appealing food and delectable wines to an attached coffee and pastry shop!  There’s also a small Inn, making this spot a great day or overnight trip.  Relax by the koi pond in a peaceful surrounding—you’ll forget you’re in a desert.
