Stay Cool, Dudes and Dudettes

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the heat wave really makes me and my team worry about our fellow colleagues in the field. We know how difficult it is to work under extreme weather, but we also know that our Employees have the best attitude in the world and will always give their all.  To reward those Hardworking Employees out in the heat, a group of Culture Committee members decided that by the end of July we were going to all hold a “Stay Cool” event at some of the most affected locations.

A “Stay Cool” event is something we created to appreciate Employees who have to work outside in the heat. We pass out water, snow cones or popsicles, and cold towels. So far, there have been “Stay Cool” events in the following locations: Columbus, Louisville, Tampa, Albuquerque, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Amarillo, Hartford, Little Rock, Tulsa, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and events to be held next week in El Paso, Jackson, and Phoenix.

This heat wave is serious business and to protect our Employees, Southwest has several procedural and regulatory requirements for all of us to follow.  For example, we use the buddy system by making sure that we are monitoring each other for signs of heat illness.  We also supply extra jugs of cold water, make sure break stations are cool enough to rest in, and add fans and misters/swamp coolers in T-points. Employees also go through annual Ground Operations training regarding severe weather precautions.

We are all in this together.  It has always been that way, and it will continue to be our responsibility to take care of each other.  That’s what families do and we are a Family at Southwest.
