Southwest Airlines Community

The Ambassadors of Culture!

slogan
Adventurer C
Our Culture Services Team in the Executive Office is dedicated solely to ensuring that the Culture of Southwest Airlines is alive and well. In order to fulfill our mission, a few of our duties include: coordinating the yearly Messages to the Field; planning Spirit Parties; writing and responding to Employee commendations; organizing the Company's Annual Awards Banquet, and supporting our Corporate and Local Culture Committees. To better service our Internal Customers across the country, we recently created several new positions called Culture Ambassadors, which are exactly what their title implies…representatives in each of our operating departments whose primary responsibility is nurturing the SOUTHWEST SPIRIT. These Ambassadors will help to ensure that our Local Culture Committees have the resources they need to foster the Southwest Culture at each of their Locations; they will plan and coordinate Departmental celebrations and appreciations; and they will act as a liaisons between the field offices and Headquarters. Please help us welcome the newest members of our Culture Services Team: culture-ambassadors-003.jpgMallory Messina (Provisioning Culture Ambassador); Brody Zucker (Reservations Culture Ambassador); Lacey Waldrep (Inflight Culture Ambassador); Shelly Wright (Maintenance & Engineering Culture Ambassador); and Dee Dee Dover, Davern Sandoval, and Valerie La Grone (all Ground Ops Culture Ambassadors). We are thrilled to announce our newest Teammates, and we have no doubt that they will be plenty busy carrying out this most important mission!

Someone asked me the other day on a different blog, "What is the key to Southwest's continued success?" Without hesitation, I answered, "our culture." It is the key to so many other things that we do ... things that no other airline can do. It gives us a shared vision and goal to work toward. Congratulations to all of our new Ambassadors! You are a vital part of our continued success. I know you are up to the challenge!

Is it true that Southwest Airlines will be wearing red on Friday's to support our troops in the war effort? I have received several emails today on this topic and as a frequent flier I wanted to say YEAH For Southwest in showing support, or if it is not true, shame on the spammers of the internet.... Sincerely, Eden Queen Creek, AZ

Hi Eden, It would be wrong to say we "WILL be wearing red on Friday's" because we ARE wearing red on Fridays and have done so for at least the last seven or eight months. Of course, it is voluntary, and not everyone participates (or forgets sometimes), but you will see a lot of red around our Headquarters Building. For more information, see Shelley's previous post. Congratulations! It looks like we have the very finest for our Culture Ambassador Team! I'm excited for each of you... You are all wonderful! I'm especially happy to know Inflight now has a Culture Ambassador! We all love Lacey's spunk and SPIRT. We are fortunate to have her as our Inflight Culture Leader! Welcome Aboard Lacey. You're going to LUV us! ; )

The Culture is what makes Southwest feel like a small Company even though we keep growing where we're going. Kudos to all of our Ambassadors! What a brilliant idea and Team. I look forward to working with Mallory in the Provisioning area.

Brian, Is that the same Pun used in the old 80's Low Budget movie called "They Call Me Bruce"? Congrats to the new Culture Ambassadors, I think they chose a great group for these new roles.

The concept of insuring that the Culture of Southwest continues to thrive and grow is based on excellent ideas like this one. I've never before known a company that makes such efforts to keep ALL of their employees feeling connected, appreciated and LUVed! In too many organizations, people are simply a means to an end or a tool to be used to accomplish something. The difference is that at Southwest, all 32,000+ Employees are part of a family that cares about them. I just wonder why so few other companies "get it", since Southwest's secret is one of the most poorly-kept secrets around? Of course, all of those folks look happy in their new jobs, but you'll notice the sly grin on the gentleman's face in the back row. I'll bet that is because he is the only guy in a group of seven lovely ladies! Tough assignment, huh? I'd bet that Blog Boy would offer a couple of bags of candy corn as a bribe just to fill in for that guy when he's on vacation. Kim 🙂

I'm curious to know how the culture ambassadors spend their time? What's the job description? Thanks!

SusanA, While I can't speak for all of the Culture Ambassadors, from what I heard today, poor Brody's career seems to have become one long attempt to get a word in edgewise with the other Ambassadors. However, he doesn't seem to mind too much, since hanging around these lovely ladies for a while now has only intensified the smile that we was wearing in the above picture! Kim EBB 🙂

why haven't other organizations including other airlines been able to copy southwest's culture?
