Southwest Airlines has officially arrived in Portland, Maine (PWM) with three daily nonstop flights to BWI that will be converted from AirTran Airways.  This service marks SWA’s 84th city and adds Maine as the newest state on our route map.

Visitors to Maine are greeted by the one of the state’s mottos, proclaiming that Maine is “The Way Life Should Be”.

Portland is Maine’s largest city, home to one third of the state’s population, and is the center of business and commerce for the state.  While Portland, Oregon (PDX) may have made it on the SWA map first, Portland, Maine was settled and incorporated first and the Oregon city was named for its east coast predecessor 65 years later.

As a born and raised “Mainer” or “Maniac”, I am wicked excited for the start of our service to the beautiful rocky Maine coastline.  The people of Maine will benefit tremendously from our 137+ seat LUV Jets as current airline service to PWM offers mostly regional jet service to major hubs like JFK or PHL.  While PWM may be in a Customer’s backyard or just a short drive away, many people in Maine are accustomed to driving to an airport such as BOS or MHT to get a better flight time, route, connection, or price.  Bringing our famous low-cost and Customer-focused service to PWM is sure to shake things up and offer many opportunities with direct and connecting itinerary options through BWI.

Commercial fishing, particularly lobster fishing, is one of the largest industries along the Maine coast, with many families having been in the business for multiple generations.

Customers and Employees alike will enjoy traveling to PWM to explore the city and the entire Maine coast.  PWM allows easy access to not only the great offerings of the City of Portland like the historic Old Port, but also to surrounding towns such as Kennebunkport and Old Orchard Beach.  I encourage you to continue your trip north along the coastline to my home - the Midcoast region dotted with lighthouses, or on to Bar Harbor, home to Acadia National Park.
