Do I have to check crutches when I fly?

Have to? No. They can be placed in the overhead bin if you want to take them onboard or gate checked if you would prefer.

There are no restrictions on crutches. TSA advises they can be in either checked or carryon bags (although what carryon bag could fit a set of crutches, I am not sure)

I bring folding travel crutches as a carry-on in a softside snowshoe bag. Fits great in the overhead compartment above your seat. Depending on how tall you are, you may have to adjust the lower part of your crutches before folding for storage in the bag. If I don't actively need the crutches while flying they also fit in a 25" checked suitcase.

If you require crutches to be mobile, you will need to "stow these medical devices" in the overhead when you board. This would be a legit reason to pre-board.
