Other travelers have likely met somebody on the plane, at the gate, at the hotel pool, even on the airport shuttle, had a nice conversation with them...but never exchanged names when it was time to go but realized later that should have been done.
You're certainly not alone and I've had my share of missed opportunities to build up community. If it's meant to be, I'm sure you'll be able to reconnect with that person once again.
