My 15 yo will be traveling alone and although those under 18 are not required to have govt issued ID, I am wondering if that's different if he is flying solo rather than with an adult over 18. Will his school ID suffice? We don't have a current passport for him.

Solution
for domestic travel if you are under 18 you won’t need an ID to go though security regardless if the minor is traveling alone or with an adult over 18 years old. All they would say is they are under 18 the TSA agent might just ask how old they are and should be on there way
