I understand that Southwest Airlines stipulates that a personal item cannot be larger than 18.5 x 8.5 x 13.5. However, I am confused as whether these numbers refer to, let's say, 18.5W x 8.5D x 13.5H, or what. It has been awhile since I have flown, and I want to get things right. I would like to know whether a laptop bag (15.1L x 12.2H x 4.3W) would be acceptable for Southwest Airlines. Thank you in advance for your response.

A personal item is something that is supposed to fit underneath the seat in front of you, that's where the dimensions come from. A standard laptop bag should be fine and the dimensions you listed do not appear to be out of line.
