“[¡Lánzate!] allows students not only to explore possibilities of study far away from their home communities, but also to remain in communication with families which are very important for them as a support system.”

-Dr. Antonio Flores, President, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)

Twenty years ago, Southwest Airlines saw there was an opportunity to help foster academic pursuits for Hispanic students while maintaining family ties, even when studying away from home. Through our nationally recognized initiative, the ¡Lánzate!/Take Off! Higher Education Travel Award, Southwest partners with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to help Hispanic students stay connected with their families and communities while pursuing higher education.

Applications are now open for the 2024 ¡Lánzate!/Take Off! Higher Education Travel Award! Hispanic students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a two- or four-year college or university at least 200 miles from their home may be eligible. Recipients receive four round trip tickets valid for travel between any Southwest Airlines domestic destination.

Since the award program began in 2004, Southwest has helped enable the possibility of studying far away from home for over 1,500 students. Many students have successfully graduated and pursued careers or graduate degrees, all while balancing family responsibilities from afar, such as translating for parents or supporting younger siblings.

“I owe a lot to my parents. I was able to provide tickets for my parents to come to my graduation. That’s the reason why I connect Southwest Airlines with home – bringing me home but also bringing home to me.” -2022 ¡Lánzate!/Take Off! Higher Education Travel Award recipient

HACU represents more than 500 colleges and universities and manages numerous programs committed to Hispanic higher education success, including internships, scholarships, college retention and advancement programs, pre-collegiate support, and career development opportunities.
