SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ENTER INTO SLOT LEASE AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EWR)

DALLAS—Aug. 27, 2010—Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines confirmed today that they entered into a lease providing Southwest Airlines access to 36 Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) slots which are currently held by Continental.

The lease deal, contingent upon the closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger by Nov. 30, 2010, and certain governmental approvals, would give Southwest Airlines the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark, New Jersey, with some flights beginning in March 2011 and a full schedule in place by June 2011. The slots are spread throughout the day and would allow Southwest the ability to integrate Newark service conveniently into its extensive national route network.

“We are excited by the opportunity to initiate service from Newark, New Jersey, and we plan to enable that service starting next March through continued flight schedule optimization using our existing fleet,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “We’ve seen tremendous demand for Southwest Airlines in the New York City/Newark area in the past year.  Customers are clamoring for our unique brand of hospitality, great value, low fares, extensive flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver outstanding Customer Service. Adding Newark provides an excellent complement to our LaGuardia and Long Island service, giving Customers one more option for travel to and from the greater New York City/New Jersey area. This service also will provide a needed injection of low fares and competition into the New York/Newark market.”

Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Continental and United Airlines to finalize arrangements for commencing its Newark service in March 2011, including the approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities.  Details on what cities Southwest will serve from Newark and on what dates that service will begin have not yet been determined.

“The divestiture of slots at Newark by the combined Continental/United will ensure competition is enhanced, and we appreciate the Department of Justice’s role in finding a fair solution,” Jordan said.

After 39 years of service, Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service.  Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and currently serves 69 cities in 35 states. Southwest also is one of the most honored airlines in the world, known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/cares to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™.  Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has nearly 35,000 Employees systemwide.  When shopping for Southwest online, it's important to know that Southwest Airlines’ low fares are only available at http://www.southwest.com/?src=PREMNASEWRANNOUNC100827.

This news release contains forward-looking statements related to Southwest’s lease of slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and its related plans and expectations. These statements also involve risks, uncertainties, assumptions, and other factors that could cause actual results to vary materially from those expressed in or indicated by them. Southwest is a great airline. Over the past four years, most of flights have been on time. However, I have never had an on time departure from Newark, so beware Southwest!

recommended route: Newark to Dayton WHY DAYTON?? To serve the Northern Ky and Cincinnati (CVG) community which currently commutes to Dayton to fly. Allows Southwest to penetrate CVG without securing slots there. It is doubtful that this community currently will drive to the Columbus airport.

Which State has which Capitol City that does not have scheduled air service. Dover Delaware, Home of many great Corporations. Dover AFB is military of course, But can't some arrangments be made for a few slots.

Great news but wish it could have happened 6 months earlier. We have to fly into Newark in November and are forced to use another airline. It has been quite some time since that has happened. And the price? Yikes!!!

This is the best news. We have children and grandchildren in NJ and have long bemoaned the fact that Southwest did not fly out from there. We always fly Southwest and use our rapid rewards. Please make sure that Fort Lauderdale/West Palm Beach are on the scheduled destination. You won't regret it.

Why don't you fly to Georgia or Columbia South Carolina? I have Family in both states and I always fly Southwest wherever I go. When I travel to these states I have to fly another airlines which I don't like to do. I fly Southwest all the places that I go. I am getting ready to fly out this Friday. Southwest is the way to go, and the best airlines around. All my family that fly, go southwest. I pray that you enter into those airports soon. Thank you for listening and allowing me to comment. I pray that you listen to my comments and add Georgia and South Carolina to your flights, now that you added Newark. Have a blessed day.

What great news!!!!!We hav4 been flying SW for years from Phila, despite living 15 minutes from newark- it's well worth the drive to PHL(1.5 hrs) for the great service we get from SW. Beware, though, EWR is not a very friendly airport, so good luck when you greet people there with a smile!

I'm really excited about your plans to access 18 round trip flights to Newark Airport. I'm hoping that Buffalo will be one of the cities to benefit from this acquisition!

Look forward to you flying into Newark. Hopefully, you will fly into Ft. Myers, Florida from Newark. Right now we use Continental from Ft. Myers to Newark ( and then back again) because they offer a bus shuttle service to LVIA in Allentown, PA. It's an idea you should consider.

Now Please Southwest do something in Cleveland with the Continental hub, if Continental abandons us . . . we love Continental, (because of it's hub here) but Southwest hopefully will have a greater presence serving Cleveland if Continental reduces flights , also start adding non-stop flights from Cleveland to Phoenix, so we and many other Clevelanders can go to see the Cleveland Indians this spring in Goodyear Arizona thank You

I think that is great you are now flying into Newark, Can you see about flying into Atlantic City, Spirit is the only airline from Ft Myers Fl. (direct flight) at an affordable fare, Then you have to pay for a seat and your bagage, not that affordable after all. Please consider it. Your are one of the better airlines.

I currently have to fly into Albany to get to my destination spot in the Catskills, a 3-hour drive. Fly another airline? Never! So...if Southwest flies into Newark, I'll cut my driving time in half. Please, please, please put Houston on your list of departure cities for Newark!

I travel a lot and Southwest is always my first choice, but you are somewhat limited where you fly. Now your ability to fly more places is coming. Yes! Make one of them PBI so I can go see the old folks more often! Loveyou, Southwest! Stay true to your roots.

Way to go Southwest and the DOJ!!! It's about time you got some slots at EWR. I live in Austin and have to go to NJ 5-6 times a year..I have to fly into Philly and drive up or even worse, (dare I say it) use another airline!!! Now just add Atlanta to that (and a few sunny international destinations) and you will have conquered the world..Keep up the great work!!!!!

Great News... WooHoo... This is what the SWA is all about; i.e.; providing customer like myself (used-to-be-a-frequent flyer with SWA two or RT every week) an excellent alternative to the East Coast, as we fly to Big Apple more often and visit NJ from there; now we will be able to go to Newark (NJ) w/o going into LGA.

My family lives in NJ and Newark is the airport of choice as it is only 20 minutes from them. It would be great for reasonable fares to help visit more.
