Southwest Debuts the 737-800: Warrior One!

Many of you have been following our updates as our new 737-800 moved through the construction process and through the first test flight on February 23. One of those steps was the “in-person” introduction today to members of the media, Southwest Employees, and guests at events hosted in Dallas.

The day kicked off with a media preview of the new aircraft, followed by an Employee celebration. At the media preview, Southwest Executives Mike Van de Ven and Brian Hirshman displayed the aircraft to reporters, showcasing the highlights of the -800’s features like the new Boeing Sky Interior, as well as discussing how the -800 will allow us to add overwater routes and more capacity to slot-restricted airports. Boeing Vice President and Program Manager for the 737 Program, Bev Wyse, closed out the media presentation with a recap of Southwest’s long association with the 737.

Sun Warrior

Then the aircraft taxied over to the Employee event, where it was dedicated and named  Warrior One in salute of the Southwest Employees’ Warrior Spirit. The 737-800 will take our airline to new places and allow us compete in highly competitive, but highly restricted markets like LaGuardia, so it’s only fitting that we name it Warrior One to reflect that “can do” attitude.

This is a beautiful aircraft, and I know our Customers will love it, but it also plays an important strategic role in our future. Warrior One and the other -800s carry 175 passengers, which is a whopping 28 percent increase over our current fleet configuration.  Besides improving our unit costs per flight, the -800 gives us opportunities for longer-haul flying and schedule flexibility by adding capacity in those high-demand, slot-controlled, or gate-restricted airports.

Sky Interior

The Boeing Sky Interior offers a quieter, more comfortable environment for Customers with taller ceilings and more overhead bin space, improved operational security features, and ambient LED reading and ceiling lighting. Besides being more effective, the new interior is energy efficient. Also, our great Flight Attendants can match the lighting to the mood onboard the aircraft—subdued at night or bright and festive for a Las Vegas flight.

After the formal part of the event, Employees were allowed to tour the aircraft and see firsthand the new Boeing Sky Interior with its improved sidewalls, larger overheads, and new ceiling with mood lighting.

Confetti

After some final certifications, Warrior One and our second 737-800 will be set to enter scheduled service on April 11. I hope you all have a chance to fly on a brand new Southwest -800 very soon!

I fly about 4-6 times a year & always liked continental over all other airlines, however, due to their merger w/ United that brought on the worst customer service on the past few flights I tried Southwest & was pleasantly surprised by how nice the whole staff was! Very enjoyable flight. Only thing I'm not a fan of is no assigned seating & cattle call like boarding, but if that's all I have to deal with then I'd rather fly southwest any day!!!!

I can't wait to see the 737-800's in the air and over water.... Hopefully you'll add Hawaii to one of your routes...I have never had a bad experience flying SWA!

Southwest is a great airline. It's great to see that they are purchasing an aircraft that CO/UA has been exploiting for years on many of Its routes. The AirTran merger will be great for Southwest.

I think Southwest is the best. My experiance flying with Southwest has always been excellent. The crew is always very friendly and at times very entertaining. You don't pay for your luggage or non alcholic beverages, arrives on time if not ahead of schedule, and great customer service. I consider myself fortunate that Southwest services our local airport. I feel Southwest has set the bar very high and the other airlines can learn so much from them.

I love Southwest, I am a very nervous flyier and somehow when I step on my flight I get relaxed by the flight attendants who meet and greet you. Just saw the new Warrior plane and I hope I get a chance to fly on one. Keep up the great work.

I think Southwest is terrific. I fly them whenever I can. Why wouldn't you fly them? They arrive almost always on time, if not early, their employees are very friendly (and funny) and they don't charge for your luggage! I am a loyal customer.

I love Southwest!. Who ever say they hate SWA is because they love to be mistreated and over charged by the other airline companies. I feel sorry for them.

While my 1965 Airstream, official tailgate vehicle of the Webber International University Warriors (www.webber.edu), is also called Warrior One, I'm guessing we're not going to get much confusion over which is which! Congrats on the cool new plane and the cool new routes it opens up!

I can't wait for the day that I see that beautiful bird and its sister ships landing and taking off at Memphis. It'll be the best thing to happen at MEM since FEDEX. Southwest rules!

Great aircraft! Another winner for SWA and Boeing. It will be nice to fly it on one of my many SWA trips.

I really like Southwest, especially their ticket change policy, no bag charge, and friendly service. Having children, tickets have to be somewhat flexible and I just can't afford $20/bag to carry everything one needs for kids, especially if it's something like a ski vacation. Occasionally, I try other airlines (or have no choice) and I regret it. I recently had a biz trip where I was booked home the wrong day, it was cheaper to buy a new ticket rather than pay the $100 change fee and the ticket price difference, ugh, very frustrating. I also really like the 737, lots of power and I just feel safe flying in it. Go Southwest!

Since flying SW for the first time about 5 years ago realizing they were the only airline that still don't charge for bags and have open seating. I have chosen SW every flight since and wouldn't have it any other way! It was amazing flying with an infant, they had empty seats on all flights I have flown with my baby and I was able to have his own seat for him even though I didn't pay a dime extra for it. We got lucky with the flights not being at capacity but still amazing service. My family has never had such great customer service and great flights that save us money as what SW offers. I will use them indefinitely and hope they continue to thrive in the economy. They must be doing something right to be able to invest in a plane like this. Go SW Airlines!

I have been flying Southwest exclusively for the past five years and secretly wondered what I was missing on the "frills" flights - as Southwest proudly boasts that it is the "no-frills" carrier... Last month (a result of someone else booking my travel) I flew Delta, American and US Air and found that what I have been missing is LESS legroom on coach and fee's for everything! Thank you Southwest- YOU ARE #1 !

Dear SWA, I fly SWA in my job and I fly PHL to RNO to see kids and grandkids. It has always been a positive experience. The crews are the best of hosts and I believe it is because they all love their jobs, who they're doing it for and it shows. I can't wait to board and fly the new '800'!!! Lou Peters Lewes, De.

I so wish that Southwest flew to Alaska. Hopefully the 737-800 help make that possible. Alaska Airlines could definitely use the competition.

These guys are great! Southwest has always been an excellent low frills airline. Travel these days can be pretty miserable, and they seem to make the best of it. It is unfortunate for the other airlines they can't duplicate this business model.

I Love Southwest. It is my favorite airline - the employees are always nice and most of the time the in flight attendants are funny and very kind. Just wish they flew to Gulfport so I did not have to fly into New Orleans to get to my grandchildren in Mississippi!

Having flown on our first trip with Southwest, we were pleasantly surprised on their customer service. Stewards and stewardess were really pleasant and helpful along with the gate staff. This is way better then when we flew on other airlines. We will be pleasantly looking at our next travel plans with Southwest. Phil S.
