Companion pass/Credit Card balance

I have the Premier Chase card.  Do I receive qualifying points or status toward the companion pass on the unpaid balance?  Is the qualifying points or status for companion pass earned simply from purchases regardless of credit card balance?

All points earned from the Rapid Rewards Visa card from Chase -- base and bonus -- are Companion Pass Tier Qualifying. Points are earned when posted to your account each month, regardless of if you carry a balance. If you return/refund a purchase made with the card, those points originally earned from that refunded purchase are deducted from the next statement.
