companion pass information on expiration

I am almost at the points for a companion pass   If we use our points to obtaint he companion pass in May 2017 or early June 2017 when will that pass expire?  Does it expire on Dec 31, 2017 or Dec 31, 2018?   Asked another way is it good for the rest of this year (the year it was earned) and all of next year?

When I made companion pass in August, it was good until the following year, so I enjoyed 16 months of companion pass! (way cool!) 

I am not sure what you mean by "If we use our points to obtaint he companion pass", can you do that?? 🙂 

By the way.. CP is the most awesome benefit.. especially since you can use points for your ticket AND bring a companion.
